For the last 5 years people in increasing numbers have asked me about Portuguese wine, what the grape varietals are, asking the differences in types of Port. At the same time i have seen more and more articles heralding Portuguese Wine as " the next big thing", surprising considering wine has wine has been produced in Portugal for 5000 years.
The paradox is; the things that make Portuguese wine so attractive and good (traditional methods, indigenous grape varieties, organic production and wide choice of wine types) are results of small producers with low yields. Supermarkets who may be keen to stock such a gem on their shelves demand higher stock levels than small producers can deliver. The options available to selling Portuguese wines to a wider market are: start mass producing at high yields, wine makers such as Mateus have excelled at such a strategy, or offer the customer the choice to buy these low wielding wines directly from the area where they're produced.
