Champion Racing has established itself as one of the top “privateer” motor racing teams in the world. Established in 1994, six years after Champion Racing President Dave Maraj started his Champion Audi and Champion Porsche dealerships in Pompano Beach, Florida, the 40-strong team has proven its mettle against some of the best teams and manufacturers in racing.
Champion Racing's motorsport foundations were laid in 1993 when it entered a Porsche RS America at Sebring and Miami (JBell/MPeters). Two years later, the Porsche 911 GT2 was introduced as Champion focused on America’s blue riband endurance events, the 12 Hours of Sebring and Daytona 24 Hours, plus other selected IMSA events.
In the American Le Mans Series, Champion Racing, the first Audi “customer” team to race an R8 LMP900 sports-prototype, sought to build on its previous 16 top-five finishes (2001/2), taking four outright wins in 2003 (Herbert/Lehto), including the prestigious 1000-mile Petit Le Mans. In its return to the Le Mans 24 Hour race after debuting there in 2001, the Champion R8 team (Pirro/Lehto/Johansson) placed third overall, becoming the first American team in nineteen years to earn an overall podium finish in the French endurance classic.
Numerous world famous motor racing stars have driven for Champion Racing during the past 10 years, including Le Mans 24 Hour race winners Derek Bell, Thierry Boutsen, Hurley Haywood, Johnny Herbert, Stefan Johansson, Tom Kristensen, JJ Lehto, Allan McNish, Emanuele Pirro, Hans Stuck Jr. and Andy Wallace. Juan Fangio II, Bill Adam, Michael Galati, Randy Pobst, James Weaver and the late Bob Wollek have also represented Champion Racing.
Meanwhile Champion Audi (one of the largest Audi dealerships in North America) and Champion Porsche (the largest-volume Porsche dealership in the world) continue to thrive in separate, state-of-the-art facilities, while Champion Motorsports, set-up three years ago to cater for factory aftermarket parts and accessories, has recently moved into impressive, purpose-built showrooms, also in Pompano Beach.
