Photojournalistic style photography, what we used to call candid, will capture a very specific emotional moment in time. Classic style portraiture, if it is done well, will preserve the memory of the persons in the photograph and people will look natural. We photographed a bride that had a Grandmother make the trip from Iowa to Denver on Amtrak in order to be at her granddaughters wedding. She hauled her oxygen tank on the train and would not have missed the wedding for any reason; I think she would have crawled to the wedding if she had to do so. I took a couple of portraits of the bride, others, and her grandmother together and later that same year her grandmother passed away. What if I had not taken those photographs? What if the couple had decided they wanted all photojournalism and no portraits? Portraits show relationships.
Another situation occurred two years ago in the summer, we photographed a wedding for Jim and Angie on July 5. Jim and Angie went on a cruise and when they came home they were horrified to learn that there home had burned to the ground because of a kitchen fire. Fortunately the fire did not destroy most of their wedding gifts and items from their wedding. Unfortunately the train from her wedding gown was lost in the fire. When they looked through the two volumes of their wedding photographs they shed tears of joy when they saw the portrait that was taken in the chapel of Angie in her wedding gown with the train attached. What if I had not taken that photograph? Wedding portraits will capture the images of those who you care the most about.
