The name, "Boise" comes from a French word meaning "wooded". It first came to use among French-Canadian fur trappers in the nineteenth century as a name for the Boise River. The name was apparently a translation of an earlier English name for it, the Wood River.

Originally known as Fort Boise, Boise was incorporated under a charter in 1864 by an act of the Idaho Territorial legislature.

A resolution to have the capital of the Idaho Territory moved from Lewiston to Boise was passed on December 7, 1864. It was changed in 1865. According to legend, the proposal for the switch was very unpopular, so members of the government snuck into the capital, stole the state seal from Lewiston and left quickly to avoid the public outrage that was sure to erupt when the citizens of Lewiston discovered the capital had been taken from them.

Boise became the capital of the state of Idaho on July 3, 1890 when Idaho was admitted to the union as the 43rd state.

Boise is home to the Boise Art Museum, which hosts several traveling exhibits each year. The city is also home to numerous theatres, such as the Boise Little Theatre (Idaho's oldest continuous theater company), the Boise Contemporary Theatre, and the Idaho Shakespeare Festival.

Boise is known for its low crime rate, extensive greenbelt running through the city, trendy downtown and quality of life. The city has been cited by publications like Forbes, Fortune and Sunset for its quality of life.

One of Boise's major attractions is the neighboring mountains and the Boise Foothills. The foothills, to the immediate north of the city, are popular for hiking and mountain biking. Recently, there has been much controversy over expansive residential development into the foothills.

For winter recreation, Bogus Basin Mountain Resort (a mere 16 miles from Boise city limits) provides excellent skiing and snowboarding facilities within an hour's drive of downtown.

Semi-professional sports teams in Boise include the short-season Class A Boise Hawks (Minor League Baseball), the Idaho Steelheads of the East Coast Hockey League, and the Idaho Stampede of the Continental Basketball Association.

If you have never made I trip to Boise Idaho, I encourage you to make plans to do so. Born and raised in San Diego California, never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that I would end up living in Idaho! All it took was one visit to see that the quality of life here is far better than that of California and I am making this statement as a life long, ocean going surfer!
