Lowlighting is the opposite process of highlighting - small amounts of hair are darkened.

With this method you place a plastic cap with small holes on your head, pull strands of hair through the holes with a small hook and then apply bleach with a small color brush or wide-toothed comb, timing it according to the manufacturers recommendations for your hair type and level of darkness.

There are added benefits to using the Hair Cap Method: After lifting your hair color to the correct level of lightness you can rinse the lightening cream from the hair and then tone with the plastic cap still on keeping the lightened locks separate from the rest of your hair. You can tone these bleached strands a few different levels of highlights or lowlights for a more controlled color using a soap-cap method, which means mix equal parts hair color, developer and your own shampoo.
