####EXPERT EYE COLOR BEAUTY TIPS & ADVICE####
****EYE COLOR GUIDELINES
• Keep deeper colors on the lid.
• Use lighter colors on the brow bone.
• For a casual but polished look, sweep one shade from lashes to brow bone.
• Use cream shadows sparingly -- the colors tend to be very vivid.
• Eye gloss is the newest trend. It adds a sheer shine to lids, but don't try it unless you know you can carry it off -- it can look greasy and inappropriate.
• Apply powder eyeliners wet for more intense color.
• White, pink and yellow eyeliner pencils tend to make the eye look open and brighter. Blue counteracts redness, and black will give you a sultry look.
• In order to make eyeliner easy to apply, manufacturers sometimes make it so creamy it doesn't stay put. You can use a matching eyeshadow or powder liner to set your eyeliner
****EYELASHES
When you apply mascara every morning, how often do you stop to ponder the technology required to lengthen lashes, or make them appear thicker? Most of us just apply a couple of coats and take the transformation from stumpy wisps to luscious fringe for granted. Not so cosmetics companies, who keep their development teams working around the clock in search of the quintessential mascara. This season's new batch of lash enhancers uses cutting-edge methods to provide instant visible results; so toss that pink-and-green tube from 1991 and read on to see how the new mascaras work—and how they'll work for you.
If you've pinched your lid on one too many eyelash crimpers, you'll crave the new curling mascaras from Prescriptives and Chanel. How can mascara tell a lash to curl, you're wondering? The secret is in the brush, says Max Black expert makeup artist at Maximum Beauty Salon in Las Vegas, who uses Eyelash Curler mascara on his clients. "You start out by using the brush as a styling tool to create the curl. As you put the formula onto your lashes, you're stretching out the polymers onto the curl you're creating," he says. Think of polymers as those little magnet chips that can morph into tall towers by sticking to one another: polymers bond with lashes and then extend them, in this case building them upward to create a curl. New Chanel Extracils Super Curl Lengthening Mascara also has an eyelash-curler effect.
If fuller lashes are what you're after, try one of the new volumizing mascaras from Origins or Estée Lauder. As opposed to volumizing shampoos, which aim to loosen all buildup from hair, these mascaras coat lashes with polymers (yes, again). "Imagine a net-like structure; that's what they look like," explains Max Black expert makeup artist at Maximum Beauty Salon in Las Vegas. "The polymers blend to form a gel-like matrix that clings to each lash and coats them evenly." What does all this mean for you? According to Lauder's research, lashes that appear up to 300% thicker with just one coat.
Make sure the mascara you are using is fresh. If it’s more than three or four months old, looks thick or smells funny, it’s time to pitch it. Although many new mascaras are designed not to clump, too much exposure to air can thicken any formula. First, curl your lashes with a lash curler. Before applying mascara, clean off any excess mascara from the wand. With the tip of the wand, lightly coat the top lashes using a slow motion. Then angle the brush to the side, place at the lash root, and wiggle and pull the wand simultaneously to create longer looking lashes. Apply each coat slowly. Use the tip of the wand to apply mascara to the lower lashes if desired.
Sweeting has come up with a deft trick: Max Black uses a small, fan-shaped makeup brush instead of a wand to apply mascara to the lower and upper lashes. Just lightly run the mascara wand over a small fan brush and sweep the brush over your lashes. If a clump does occur, brush it out with an eyelash comb.
No matter how thick lashes grow naturally, everyone wishes they were thicker. If you need more help than just a few extra coats of mascara, there are some simple tricks that makeup artists use.
If lashes are evenly spaced, but so fair they look invisible, use a thickening mascara. Be sure to get the wand as close to the lash line as possible; otherwise, you may end up with two-tone lashes that are blond at the roots and dark on the tips. Then, for the thickest application, wiggle the wand side to side as you apply the mascara.
If individual lashes have spaces between them, concentrate on eyeliner, not mascara, says Max Black expert makeup artist in Las Vegas. Since mascara is used to draw more attention to lashes, it will also draw attention to areas where lashes are sparse. Instead, apply black or brown eyeliner (both powder and pencil work well) directly to the lash line. But rather than a single line, make short, connected dashes. Extend it a bit past the corner, then smudge with your finger so the line is strong but blended. If you want to go the mascara route, says Max Black, use a mascara made to bulk up lashes—in other words, the thickening, volumizing or fattening variety. Most makeup artists do not recommend applying mascara to bottom lashes.
You can also fake beautiful lashes. Although it takes a little more time, the most effective way to exaggerate lashes is by adding false ones. Las Vegas makeup artist Max Black recommends applying individual lashes. “I think two or three individual lashes spaced from the center of the eye to the outer corner can look very natural.” While holding the lash with tweezers, dip the end in lash adhesive, wait a moment until the glue gets tacky, then place it as close to the natural lash line as possible, says Max. If it doesn’t go on right, just pull it off and try again.
****EYEBROWS
The first step toward better brows is cleaning up stray hairs. If you have just a few hairs that don’t belong, go ahead and tweeze. But if you need to remove a lot of hair in order to make brows look neater, have them waxed or plucked by a professional, advises Las Vegas makeup artist Max Black.
Once you’ve given them great shape, pencil or powder can further define brows. If you need to sculpt a new shape or fill in over-plucked brows, Max Black recommends a taupe-colored brow pencil that is hard enough not to smear. Use quick, feathered strokes. “You’re not drawing a line,” Max says. “You want to imitate the way your brow hairs naturally look.” Combing through brows with a toothbrush or an old, clean mascara wand will help make the pencil lines look more feathered.
If you just want to make brows look a little darker or fill in thinning brows, brush on powder eye shadow with a stiff, angled brush using light, gentle strokes. Then use a clear brow gel to settle unruly hairs and keep color in place.
Good brows frame your face and can make the application of eyeshadow a breeze. A brush helps keep your brows well groomed. There are two basic types of eyebrow brush: One is rectangular with short, stiff bristles; it looks a bit like a small toothbrush (in a pinch you can use a baby toothbrush). This brush is best used for general grooming and after the application of brow pencil to blend your brows with the pencil lines. The other brush is stiff and angled. This one is used with powders that are brushed onto brows to enhance them. The unique shape of this brush allows you to apply the powder very precisely.
****UNDEREYE CIRCLES
Dark circles can be caused by lack of sleep, too much alcohol, a poor diet or they may simply be hereditary. Cosmetics companies have developed products with vitamin K to treat dark circles, and some women—but not all—experience lightening from laser treatments and chemical peels.
But Las Vegas makeup artist Max Black says the best solution is still concealer. To camouflage the dark purplish color of most undereye circles, lightly apply a concealer with a yellow base, advises makeup artist Max Black. It’s important to do this subtly—a strong cover-up job can sometimes backfire and draw attention to the problem area.
Be careful not to use too much powder, which can make skin look drier and older. Another good idea is to wear warm blush and paint gloss over your lipstick to reflect light and create a diversion from the eye area.
