Watch Out For That Fork In The Road!
"Alice came to a fork in the road. 'Which road do I take?' she asked. 'Where do you want to go?' responded the Cheshire cat. 'I don't know,' Alice answered. 'Then,' said the cat, 'it doesn't matter."

Every decision you make is the proverbial "fork in the road."

Since almost all of us are making this up as we go along, we often do the mental equivalent of tossing a coin. This can be hazardous to your wealth, health and peace of mind.

What if you knew someone who had walked this road before and knew where all the forks led? And not only did they know where all the forks led, but could help you identify what destination you would be most pleased to reach and all the correct forks to take to reach it? Would that be helpful to you?

I know it would have been of incalculable value to me!

The tools that enable life coaches to perform this service for you are their experience, their ability to understand you and your needs, and their knowledge of what we call “the goal-setting process.”

Very briefly, here’s what the goal-setting process is all about.

Begin by deciding where you want to be in 10, 15 or 20 years. This is relatively easy for some lucky few, since they’ve known from childhood what they want to be … and where. Others of us aren’t so fortunate. Sometimes it takes half a lifetime to figure out what we like, what we can do well, and what that means in terms of our destination.

Once you are reasonably sure you’re interested in some particular destination, begin your research. Talk with people who are already where you want to be. Ask them how they got there, what it required in terms of training, experience, dedication, persistence, etc. This will give you some idea of what it will take for you to get there too.

Work backwards from there, investigating each previous step taken by people you talked with: where did they need to be just before they got to where they are (Example - did they need to be a Vice-President before they became President).

Repeat this process until you know what you need to do next, right now, to begin working toward your goal. Then begin working forward with your plan: what do you need to do tomorrow, next week, next month, next year, two years from now, five, ten?

This is a rather laborious process and takes a great deal of time and persistence. One of the primary things a life coach can do for you is to help guide you through this process and hold you accountable for persevering. It’s a rare individual who can find the degree of self-discipline needed to complete this process alone.

Is your plan carved in stone? Not at all! One of the most important characteristics of highly successful people is adaptability. Sometimes your plans will meet with opposition you can’t overcome. Sometimes circumstances will change so radically as to make your plans irrelevant. A session with your life coach will help you gain perspective on changing circumstances and how to adapt your plan to these new circumstances.

The bottom line is: it’s far easier to choose a destination, develop a plan for reaching it, and adapt to changing circumstances when you have an experienced, sympathetic companion who has only your best interests at heart.
