There are two types of brides: the first is laid back and doesn't want to worry about whether everything is going smoothly. This is the type of bride that just goes with the flow. The second type wants to be involved in every little detail surrounding the reception. Whatever type of bride you are, there are a few things you need to do to ensure that when the big day comes, the fate of your reception lies in competent hands.
Unless you have an "active" wedding planner, the chain of events will most likely be governed by your DJ. Surprised? Well, your not alone. Studies show that when planning a wedding reception, the majority of brides allocate the smallest portion of their budget to the entertainment. That is amazing considering that the entertainment is what your guests remember most about your reception. In addition to being responsible for the success of your reception dance, the DJ also controls the flow of events by making announcements all night long directing your guests to watch the cake cutting and take part in the garder toss. For this reason, you should be able to easily communicate with your DJ. Since you would like to enjoy your party, it wouldn't be much fun if you had to stand over the DJ's shoulder making suggestions all night. Hopefully your DJ offers some other way for you to let him/her know everything you want in advance.
The DJ for your reception should offer some kind of reception planning sheet. This planning sheet will detail every tradition and dance for the evening so that the DJ wil know exactly what you want. You should have the opportunity to list song titles for your special dances as well as options such as "Cake Cutting" and the "First Dance". This will give you peace of mind so you can enjoy your special day.
The planning sheet is a vital part of your reception that should be given adequate attention, but it's also important not to waste too much time when filling out your planning sheet. I would suggest taking an hour or so to detail the events with your groom, put them all on paper, and then put it away for a few days. After you've had time to clear your mind a little, look at the sheet again and visualize your big day including all of these events, and change anything you want. Set it aside again for about a week while you take care of other planning. Look at it one more time and make any final changes. You should also note any special instructions on the planning sheet. Everything should now be exactly how you want it. Its good to return your planning sheet to your DJ a minimum of 30 days in advance. This will give him/her adequate time to purchase any special or hard to find music and to review your requests. If any changes are necessary, a good DJ will be available to discuss your reception at least during normal business hours. Some DJs, including Anytime Entertainment are available in the evening also.
