Grocery Store Flowers
I recently made a walk through the "floral department" at my local grocery store. Great Prices! $14.95 for a cello wrapped bouquet of mixed flowers. Every color you can imagine, including brown. Yes, BROWN. Brown tips on the edges of the yellow lilies, and the edges of the white daisy petals had a similar tone. And…Oh My, the roses? Slimy petals, a sure sign that these roses are very old. Pinpointing the problem is not always easy. These flowers could look bad for several reasons. Here we will discuss the essential steps that must be taken to make sure that your flowers will provide long-lasting beauty for you or your recipient.
Florists must start with the freshest, highest quality flowers available. If the wholesaler that provides the flowers sends poor quality flowers, it will be very obvious in the finished product. REAL florists have the experience and knowledge to analyze not only their product but know what wholesalers ship quality product. This is the first step in making sure that you, the consumer, are purchasing FRESH flowers that will last.
Just so everyone is informed… Every type of flower that exists requires detailed processing steps. It is essential that the required steps are taken when flowers arrive from a wholesaler or the flowers will not only look bad, they won’t last. More often than not, grocery store florists do not have the knowledge or equipment to properly process flowers. This can have a profound effect on flower life and quality. I noticed that most of the flowers in the grocery store were not even in a cooler, they were simply in buckets of water in the aisles. Flowers must be kept at a proper temperature to ensure that they will last.
Only a professional florist has the floriculture knowledge required to properly identify fungus, disease and poor quality. They know how to pick the freshest, highest quality flowers and process them is such a way that the flowers will outlast and outperform even the finest grocery store bunch of flowers.
Not to mention your grocery store florist won’t special order anything and they do not deliver. The grocery stores do not look to hire qualified people to sit and design flower arrangements. Floral Design is an art. It takes a skilled knowledgeable florist to create a true Floral Piece.
So my little advice for today -- if you go to the grocery store for flowers - you get what you pay for. By the way, If you took that $15.00 to your local florist, they would sell you $15.00 worth of FRESH FLOWERS (that won’t smell like the Catch of the day). They will look better and last a lot longer, meaning you are getting a better VALUE. Don’t fear your retail florist because you are on a limited budget! Your neighborhood florist is the best place to buy flowers!
