How to feed your new Lhasa Apso puppy.
Your puppy is a sensitive and intelligent individual as the guide to the standard states:
"Seldom a pet but rather a companion; often a clown, but never a fool" You are now the leader of your Lhasa Apso's pack, and must teach him or her to fit into your home so that you have a harmonious relationship. If you are willing to give him or her enough time and attention you will have the most delightful, loving and loyal companion, that will give you many many years of loving companionship.
Lhasa Apso's need a reasonable amount of exercise every day, and proper feeding and grooming, but above all they want your company and to be loved!
Feeding:
At 7 to 8 weeks your puppy should be having four meals a day of a top quality complete puppy food, such as Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice Puppy food. This is a top quality complete food containing everything a growing Lhasa Apso puppy needs, including the correct levels of vitamins and minerals without artificial additives or coloring, and everything they need for a beautiful healthy coat. No additional supplements are needed. Follow the feeding guide on the Dog food bag
based on the weight and age of your Lhasa Apso puppy. Your Lhasa Apso puppy should readily eat this food dry, but you may also add a small amount of canned food to some of the meals if your puppy likes this.
You must always have fresh water available for your Lhasa Apso puppy; preferably in a non spill crock style water bowl so that it cannot be spilt or played in so easily! Some puppies can be "fussy" eaters, and do not readily eat enough food. It may be that with the change in home, and without the other puppies around encouraging him or her to eat, your puppy may not seem very keen on his or her food for the first few days. Just put a small quantity of the top quality puppy food down at regular intervals, and take up again after twenty minutes to 30 minutes. If you constantly offer other foods it will turn into a finicky
eater and may stop eating completely.
By twelve to sixteen weeks of age three meals a day will be sufficient, and by 6 months two meals a day will be fine and by a a year one meal a day will be what he or she will be eating for the rest of his life.
Do not let your Lhasa Apso puppy become over weight, as this will put undue pressure on the growing bones, joints and ligaments causing problems when he or she gets older. You should be able to just feel the ribs of your Lhasa Apso puppy or adult if you cannot they are over weight.
You will change your Lhasa Apso to a good quality adult food when they are approximately
12 months old again a good top quality dog food like Nutro Natural Lamb and Rice adult, without artificial colors or additives would be a good choice. Remember any changes in your Lhasa Apso's dog food must be made gradually to keep them from having an upset stomach.
Good luck with your new Lhasa Apso baby!
