Different forms of property searches on Find dream home:

We have designed the search engine to be as flexible as possible to allow both broad and narrow queries. A broad query means that you want to browse many properties with similar features in a large area (e.g. state or province). A narrow query means that you know exactly what you are looking for and only want to browse properties meeting these criteria.

Broad Queries

Find-Dream-Home allows you to execute a search to the state/province level. Simply select the country and state or province of interest; leave all text fields blank and leave all dropdown lists set at the default value 'ALL' (not applicable); then click 'Search'. All listings in the selected location will be displayed. This is the broadest search possible; to narrow the results to specifics read the next section.

Narrow Queries

OK, now you know how to execute a broad query its time to look at how you can find exactly what you want. To locate a property you can search on up to 5 location parameters (country, state/province, city, county, and address), and up to 5 detail parameters (# of bedrooms, # of bathrooms, price, waterfront, and type).

Searching by Location

You can specify your location using 2 dropdown lists (Country, and State/Province), and 3 free form text fields (County, City, and Address). When you specify a value in the location drop-down the search will return exact matches, e.g. if you specify a search for properties in New Jersey, only properties in this location will be displayed.

The text fields allow you to refine your search to specific areas. When a property is listed on Find-Dream-Home the agent or owner fills in various details, e.g. price, address etc. When entering the address, there may be differences in spelling, grammar, abbreviations from one person to the next. For example person A may refer to 'New York City' simply as 'New York'. Person B then searches for a city named 'New York City', and doesn't find any listings because 'New York' is not equal to 'New York City'. Computers compare text character by character, if all characters are not the same the string is different.

Wildcard Character

Enter the wildcard character '*'. When you type this character into a free form text field such as city, it tells the search engine to match any properties with similar city names. For example Person A lists his/her city as 'New York'. As discussed in the previous section a search on 'New York City' returns no properties. However if the search is now performed with '*New York*', it tells the search engine to match any property that has a city name with the embedded characters 'New York', this brings up a successful match.

Hints and Tips

When searching by location use the wild card character instead on names like City and County. Try searching on 'Erie*' rather than 'Erie County', or 'New York*' instead of 'New York City'.

Searching by Detail

Detailed searches are performed using dropdown lists that set a specific value, # of bedrooms, # of bathrooms, waterfront, property type and price. Setting these dropdowns to 'ALL' means they will not be used in the search (i.e. all properties will be returned).

Setting the higher price to 'ALL' indicates that you don't want to cap the price. Setting lower price to 'ALL' means you want to view all properties above $0
