Usually a dog's life with us is short. We learn each time and hopefully we are better handlers with each of our dogs.
Working Service is based on the natural use and cultivation of a dogs natural abilities, and those of the handler. A dog that unnaturally is taught to chase a ball and ignore a threat, or to choose to go insane over a rolled up towel or piece of meat, is not drives. It is DRIVEN. .DRIVEN into a madness that over rides common sense and dignity. I can not understand why anyone would breed a dog incapable of thinking or reacting to anything but a ball. There is now what is termed protection drive; there is fight drive and now combat drive. ALL of which are of no use when a dog is driven into madness. Clear head, sound mind, sound body. This is where natural ability lives.
My dogs are motivated by desire to work. Not driven by madness to perform. Real work demands a principle of respect. It can not be performed as a trick.
In the philosophy of Working Service training to start young is of utmost importance. It is also very well noted that negative response can be developed as well as positive response. For this reason one must know what they are doing before they begin. An exercise should never be attempted unless you understand its application and you read and communicate very well with your dog. To loose a week in a dog life is to loose a year. To loose a month is to loose the dog. This may and often does, go unnoticed until real stress has to be worked through. Take a young pup and put him on a slippery floor. You will see that if you communicate properly to him, he soon overcomes this obstacle. Now walk on a slippery floor with an older dog for the first time. The dog will be in flight or completely in avoidance. We must accept what we see, without excuse. We must also never put a guess on the front lines.
At no time has the work and training methods of what we do been proven so truthful and correct as on the requirements made on teams after Sept.11th.There is upon the coming together of so many hands on people no room for even discussion anymore. The line not only between what is known as sport training but those handlers has not only been drawn but also etched in stone. It has been proven and the results of the test done in fire and paid for in human life. For all of those that truly seek to know the truth and to prepare for what is ahead, there will soon be a forum. For too long people who have little or no knowledge have been in positions upon which others depend on their knowledge. They too have been tested and found wanting. That however is not the issue. The real mission is not to be caught up in foolishness, but to train and prepare in a time when it is so important. For those who know it is simply our job. Our responsibility and our obligation. As the days pass since our training together we will all be eager to learn and teach, let us do so with the integrity that the work deserves.
