This is the LVBMA Bi-Monthly Fun Race open to all sailboats and skipper experience. Contact me at captkimo01@yahoo.com to confirm that the race is on schedule. Cancellation may occur due to weather conditions or lack of interest.
WHEN: Saturdays on JULY 24, SEPTEMBER 25, NOVEMBER 27, 2004
8 AM Captains' Meeting Callville Bay Marina Restaurant. Meeting to give time "hack" of offical race time per GPS reading, and determine race course based on wind conditions. Horn signals in preparation for starting the race are:
9:20 AM Three short blasts
9:25 AM Two short blasts
9:30 AM Race Starts with ONE LONG BLAST
~2 PM termination of race if not wind. NO SPINNAKERS allowed as most do not have one. Monitoring VHF Channel 68 at the start and finish of the race.
If time permits and skippers are interested, we can have a late lunch prior to recovery of boats.
WHERE: Callville Bay Marina, Lake Mead NV (12 miles from JT Rt 147/167 on Northshore Scenic Drive, Lake Mead NV). Courtesy dock is very short due to the low water conditions and the movement of the floating slips into deeper water. Stay close to the floating docks or center of the channels/bay as Lake Mead is down over 85 feet and many unmark shoals are present.
RULES: 1)DON'T run into another boat 2)NO penalities will be assigned 3) First Commodore's ruling on results are final, no appeal. Remember, PFD are required on all children 12 years of age and under at all times while on the boat. Individual PFD should be assigned to all crew members prior to getting underway from the dock. They should size the adjustable strapes on their assigned PFD, so that in an emergency they can easily put on the PFD and fasten it to themselves within a minute. Monitor VHF channel 1 NOAA weather channel and scan channel 16 for emergency broadcasts by the US Park Service. Take note if any red flags are flying from the ranger station flag pole. 1 RED dove tail flag "Breezy condition" <= 21 MPH, 2 RED dove tailed flags "Windy Conditions" > 21 MPH (frequent white capped waves). "Gale Force Winds" <= 54 MPH, 1 RED Square flag (RACE would be cancelled for sure)
WHAT: is "FUN RACE"; it is to interest novice sailors in enjoying friendly sailboat racing, and is the reason why we avoid using the complex sailboat racing rules so that all may enjoy the fun of racing against other sailboats without the knowledge of the racing rules. We will be using the best available PHRF handicap for the various boats in the race. The reward at end of the race is the discussion of boat's result using "Excuses and Brag" of accomplishments or non-accomplishments, LOL.
Typically, I launch my boat "FOREVER" the Friday before the Saturday race and beach the boat overnight in a nearby cove of Callville Bay. I do this in order to test the wind conditions by sailing several different tacks and beats with the hope that these same wind conditions will remain the same for Saturday (I can dream, can't I). Also I will be able to set the race marker(s) if necessary early on Saturday morning.
E-MAIL ME THAT YOU ARE COMING EITHER WITH YOUR BOAT OR AS CREW, SO I WILL KNOW HOW MANY TO EXPECT.
