This will show you the techniques used by SEO professionals around the globe on how to get your pages within the top ranks of Google.
Part I: Getting listed.
First off for you people who don't know what Google is, it's the most popular search engine on the internet. Google can make your website or break it. That's why I'm writing this little tutorial to help those who need help in getting started.
The first step here would be to get listed in Google. There are several ways that this is possible and here I'm going to mention 3:
a) The first and most obvious way would to submit your URL to Google through their website. The address for that is: http://www.google.com/addurl.html
Through this way it can take weeks/months for Google to get you indexed, so if you're not a patient one (as I was) I would suggest the alternate ways that I'll explain below.
b) This way isn't a proven fact, but I think it does work. Install the Google toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com) and browser your site. It is said that the toolbar sends information back to the Google servers, that way if your site hasn't been discovered by Google the toolbar will pick it up and send information about it back to the servers that way your site will be spidered.
c) This is the quickest way to get your site listed. Have a site with a high PR (PageRank of at least 5) link to your site. These high ranked sites get spidered at least once a day, therefore if the spider finds your link one of these crawled sites with high PR it will then pay a little visit to your site.
Part II: What to do once listed.
Once your site is listed in Google you need to optimize it for the best results in SERPs (Search Engine Ranking Page). The way you optimize you page will affect where you land in the results. There are several key elements when it comes to optimizing your page. I'm only going to mention a few which I find to be the most important ones.
a) Title: The title of your page must contain the keywords you are aiming for when someone searches on a search engine. You have to think and ask yourself “what question would one might ask in order to get to my site?". If your site has to do with camouflage hats, then your title must contain those words (your keywords).
b) H1 H2: H1,2 etc… are the headers. You must also place your keywords here.
c) Meta-Description: In the meta-description tag it's good to give a brief description of what the page has to offer and what its' content is about.
d) Bold, Underlined, Italics: It is good to have your keywords in any of these font types. If in the context of a paragraph you have your keywords in it, underline them, put them in bold and italicize it. It lets the spider know that these words are somewhat important.
e) Backlinks: This is probably one of the most important things when it comes to optimizing. People linking to your site/page is a backlink. You need backlinks with good anchor text (ex. The Book Shop) the words “The Book Shop (http://thebookshop.us)" make up the anchor text, yet the URL it goes to when clicked on is: http://thebookshop.us. So the more backlinks I have with the anchor text of “Book Shop" the better I'm going to be ranked in Google for those terms.
More will come in my next article. If you like this one email me at: jfontestad@thebookshop.us and I'll start writing another article with more depth.
