Most job postings garner dozens, if not hundreds of replies, and finding the right candidate for a position can be a difficult task for even the most skilled HR professionals or recruiters. With many individuals turning to resume tracking software as a method for winnowing out the most qualified applicants, what other methods can be used to separate top applicants from their less-qualified companions?
1. Look for applicants who have shown initiative in the past. Today's job market requires that every member of every company be actively engaged in helping their company earn money, and one way that many companies are finding they can adapt to a changing economy is by having workers who really consider all the options when approaching their career. Those with sales experience or creative training often show themselves to be powerful critical thinkers who can easily adapt to new situations - exactly what today's companies need to retain their competitive edge.
2. How will your applicant's personality fit in with your company? This is best explored through phone conversations or face to face interviews, since many people have difficulty expressing their personality in written format. If your company is a straight-laced business where personal touches interfere with your brand's message, then someone who is boisterous and used to personal involvement in their projects may become easily frustrated in a role with you. Similarly, someone who is quiet and reserved may not be the best match for a company where the atmosphere is outgoing and familial. In situations where two candidates are closely matched in skills, offering an open position to the job applicant whose personality most closely matches that of your organization is likely to make a successful pairing for both parties.
3. Offer on-site experience testing to determine whether a candidate can do everything they say they can. A popular example is helping determine how well a candidate can juggle tasks - something that has gained increasing importance as businesses have trimmed excess workers. Simulate a situation which might take place for your candidate, such as something where they will have to juggle a number of tasks at once. Observe their process as they decide which tasks to prioritize and which can wait. Do they match with the opinions of your organization? If so, then you may have found an excellent potential employee. If not, then you may want to consider looking at another candidate.
4. Look for internal consistency in resumes. Resume tracking software can help you find applicants with consistent track records whose experience responds to specific needs on the part of your organization. Use technology to help you perform your role more efficiently by using this software to its fullest potential.
So, with these points in mind hopefully you are now better positioned to select the right job candidate for the open position you have at your company or organization. As with all things, the above are some helpful tips, but its certainly always wise to mix in a little of your own background and experience, and overall just make sure you are comfortable with the candidate and that they would be a good fit with your company.
