With increased pollution in Budapest and the court passing limitations on polluting vehicles, there is a need to launch environmentally sound transport methods on the roads.
The Riksa Media rickshaw is a small-scale neighborhood means of transport; it is also known by a variety of other names such as pedicab, bugs, bikecab, or tricikli and háromkerekű in Hungary. The term Rickshaw is used more broadly, and also refers to auto rickshaws, and the, now infrequent, rickshaws pulled by a person on foot (hand pulled rickshaws). Cycle rickshaws are man-powered, a type of tricycle designed to carry passengers in addition to the driver.
The Riksa Media vehicle is powered by a driver as one would a bicycle, though some of our rickshaws are equipped with an electric motor to assist the driver. The so called „riksa” is a tricycle. The configuration of driver and passenger seats vary by design, though passenger seats are mostly located above the span of the longest axle in the rear.
As a key part of the urban landscape in Budapest, rickshaws have been the subject of movies and other artwork, as well as being extensively decorated themselves.
The old cycle rickshaw used for decades now in India has been completely re-engineered for the safety and comfort of passengers, and to reduce the workload on the rickshaw puller. The Riksa Media rickshaw has 21 speed gears, reduced length of long chain drives, back-wheel shaft braking, better suspension and less aerodynamic drag than the existing ones.
The rickshaws have also been designed so that they can host an ample advertisement surface. The surface is lit from behind with small consumption high-tech LEDs so that even the light-weight batteries last for at least 8 hours. The variability of the traction chain enables a rickshaw puller to take two passengers on a 2–6% slope quite easily and without getting up from his seat. The rickshaw is made of mild steel angles, is light in weight, sturdy, and has ample luggage and leg space. The weight of the Riksa Media vehicle is 95 kg. The life span is estimated to 6-8 years.
Future improvement plans for the existing models are as follows:
• There is necessity to develop a low cost sensor/controller for sensing the load on the rickshaw and to switch on and off the engine accordingly.
• We need to develop a low cost battery charger based on switch-mode energy supply (SMPS) technology, which should be tested and could be mounted on the rickshaw, so that the battery cells could be charged anywhere on the road. Presently, such low-cost battery chargers are non-existing.
• The problem of battery charging has to be answered before large-scale employment can take place.
• In the future, there is necessity to develop performance capacitors as battery replacements. These types of capacitors are being introduced in the United States as well as Europe for electric vehicles
• Electric vehicles are presently restricted by the battery technology. An excellent and cheap energy storage system can make electric vehicles the transport means of tomorrow.
