I am sure the term 'identity theft' will sound familiar to you. Whether you believe it or not, there are so many ways that people can steal your identity and if you are not careful, it might be your identity that gets stolen. It can happen anytime to anyone regardless of race, gender and age. This is why it is extremely important to keep track of your finances and that includes getting a copy of your credit report once every three months. It doesn't matter how good or bad your credit is, your identity can get stolen either way. Luckily though there are some ways in which you can prevent them from happening.
This is one of the simplest things to do and I bet many people already practice it – I know I do. When you receive your bills, bank statements, credit card offers and anything which has your full name printed on it alongside with your address and other private information about yourself, the first thing you should do before throwing it away is tearing them up into many pieces. It helps if you already possess a shredder since this would make it virtually impossible for the pieces to ever be glued back together. This technique helps you 'hide' your identity. After all, you don't really know who might go through your trash once it is out of the house. Thus this is a very good safety precaution to take with all these kinds of mail.
The second precautionary measure you can take is to install a locked mailbox outside of your house. This helps A LOT and I cannot stress it enough – A LOT! The reason is that even though we all are aware of the law that it is against the law to tamper with mail that isn't addressed to you; we really don't know if someone has rummaged through our mailboxes and stolen some of our mail. So in order to prevent that from even happening, why not simply lock your mailbox? That way, if it does happen to get tampered with, at least you will be aware of it and a police report can be filed.
Ok, so you like to shop online - in this day and age, who doesn't? In this tech savvy day and age, from teenagers to elderly like to shop online. I'm not saying you should stop shopping online altogether but you should definitely be aware of how credible the websites you visit and want to buy from are. If you need to make a purchase, only do so on websites that are trusted. The reason is simple - you are revealing your credit card number. Imagine what would happen if the site is not one that can be trusted?
