Lingerie can roughly be described as traditional lingerie which is generally feminine, not overly revealing and whether it be a bra, panties or a robe not overtly sexual. There is nothing wrong with lingerie as it serves a purpose as clothing and millions of women are wearing lingerie whether they call it that or not. A chemise that a woman's sleeps in provides coverage, some warmth depending on the fabric selection and may be sensual as little else is worn to bed for the sake of comfort. A woman wears a bra that if properly fitted provides needed support for her breasts, can be worn all day and little if any consideration is given to the sexiness of the garment. Panties can also fall into this category as comfort and utility are the primary requirements with little if any thought given to being sexy. Lingerie can be found in department stores, discount stores and is the largest segment of the lingerie business. Women seek and need lingerie for daily use that is affordable, durable and comfortable. Some of these characteristics do not apply to the other two forms of lingerie for one reason or another.
Sexy lingerie is the next category of lingerie that we will explore and the distinctions can be subtle and obvious depending on the garment. The description changes depending on the function of the garment shifting from comfort to sex appeal and durability from sturdy or daily use to occasional or infrequent use. Further the comfort of a sexy lingerie garment may be almost non existent as the primary need with sexy lingerie is appearance, style and overt sexuality.
Sexy lingerie is a term used by so many that it is difficult to define precisely but let's just say that sexy lingerie is meant for show while lingerie is more in the role of function. When a woman wears sexy lingerie various parts of her anatomy may be on display while lingerie will tend to be for support or coverage. Thus the differences are clear and sexy lingerie is all about the visual effect as well as the effect sexy lingerie has on the wearer. When purchasing sexy lingerie a man or a woman generally has romance on their minds. Of course anyone can buy anyone else sexy lingerie but generally casual acquaintances shy away from buying such a personal garment and the obvious question arises, "What are your intentions in buying me such a garment"? Sexy lingerie is usually bought by a woman in a relationship with a man or by a man in a relationship with a woman. Buying a woman sexy lingerie on a first date is considered in bad taste if not outright rude.
Sexy lingerie is generally dainty and fragile, skimpy and suggestive but usually in good taste. Sexy lingerie can be as simple as panties and a bra but unlike a lingerie bra and panties, sexy bras and panties are often push up bras or perhaps a thong panty. Sexy means different things to different people but in general sexy means stretch to fit a woman's curves, accentuating parts of a woman's body such as her breasts or legs. The occasions sexy lingerie is given gives some insight as to what separates it from lingerie. Sexy lingerie is typically given or purchased on Valentine's Day which is a romance holiday. Sexy lingerie is also typically purchased or given as a wedding present or shower present. Other times include vacations, honeymoons, reunions and anniversaries. All of these occasions have romance in common and the garment is chosen to be worn on the evening of the celebrations.
Finally but most importantly is exotic lingerie, what it is and what is it good for? Exotic lingerie is different from sexy lingerie much like sexy lingerie is different from lingerie. Exotic is the unusual, the mysterious and the out of the ordinary. Examples of exotic lingerie may be open bust lingerie, sheer lingerie sets, sexy body stockings and shelf bras. These are garments that not every woman will and wants to wear as not only are sensual body parts exposed, they are emphasized to the extreme. These garments are not worn for comfort or for public viewing but for sensual moments, intimate encounters and romantic interludes. Exotic lingerie is designed for the small number of adults that require outrageous lingerie that is not subtle, not mundane but very provocative and charged with femininity.
Who buys exotic lingerie? While anyone can purchase exotic lingerie it does tend to be purchased by women in their 30's and 40's and beyond as opposed to women in their 20's. The reasons vary of course but part of it may be that younger women don't yet see the need for lingerie. Lingerie is part of the spice of life that younger women don't need or see the need for at that point in their lives. The younger women may not have reached the point in their relationship where role playing, romantic evenings or such things matter. Older women may have reached the point in their lives where lingerie is a spark, or a not so subtle signal that romance is imminent. Whatever the reasons these types of garments can be considered sexy costumes that come with built in appeal. They are at the opposite end of the spectrum from lingerie as exotic lingerie is not meant to be worn to sleep in but to set in motion romantic thoughts and actions. Comfort is not the purpose as exposing oneself is not particularly comforting but assertive and possibly aggressive as to ones intentions. When a man gives a woman a shelf bra it is not for the purpose of adding to her business wardrobe but to suggest she wear this very suggestive garment for their personal pleasure.
Regardless if you agree that there are different types of lingerie or that it really matters it is true that lingerie is available for whatever purpose you deem it necessary. Lingerie is a lot of things to a lot of couples and whatever you call it matters little as long as you enjoy wearing lingerie and discovering its value in your personal relationships.
