Beginner to Winner:
A little effort and persistence goes a long way! Think about it, how many comps did you enter before you became interested? It may take a trip on a bus to get that elusive entry form or to purchase a product that you would not normally require (many items can be kept as Christmas or Birthday presents). These and local comps have the lowest entries therefore you have more chance of winning! Entries into competitions are probably much lower than you would expect, particularly the slogan comps just because they require a little effort! Knowing this and a little practice at slogan writing allows us compers to clean up. If you have yet to win the big one, don't give up, you will.
Types of competitions.
Plain paper:
A piece of plain paper with your name, address, phone number and signature on it, this may also include other information, answers to questions and/or a slogan. This paper goes into an envelope which is addressed and sent. Only one plain paper entry in each envelope please, many promoters request this. Plain paper means plain paper (strangely enough), not a postcard. Can be typed or hand written unless specified.
Postcard:
The promoters name and address on one side and your details (name, address, phone number and signature) on the other, don't forget if necessary to include answers to questions and slogans. We advise to write the promoters name and address as normal (top to bottom) and your details side on (turn the card 90 degrees), this seems to stop the postman delivering your postcards back to you!
Question competitions and prize draws:
The winner of these competitions are usually drawn from the hat, so to speak. If the promoter lists the names and addresses on a computerised database then there is an equal chance of winning (and losing!). If they really are drawn from a hat, then statistics show that most people would choose the most interesting looking postcard or envelope. Postcards seem to do better than envelopes too, perhaps its because the promoters don't have to open them. If you do decide to make or add decoration to your own, in our experience gold and glitter always does well (and neat clear writing).
Instant Win:
If you enter the instant win (no purchase necessary) route then all reputable promoters treat you in the same way and offer you the same opportunities as if you walked into a shop and purchased their product. In short, you have the same chance of winning a prize by sending a postcard as you do by buying the product. Many products however, are better value to buy than the price of a stamp, crisps, gum, chocolate bar etc. It can be handy of course if you don't want to buy a new washing machine or for instance if you live in an area that does not get Jersey potatoes! It makes no difference if you use highly decorated home made postcards or plain shop bought ones.
