Lunch out or Lunch in?

Tick-tock-tick-tock-tick-tock the clock strikes 12:30pm. This means lunch time for most of us; working or not. We contemplate on what to have and where to go for lunch. Let's assume something simple and healthy – a sandwich. The average cost of having lunch outside of the home can be anywhere between $8 - $16. During this global credit crunch we need to make decisions, even as simple as this if we need to save money. Our lifestyles need to change.

A simple sandwich can cost anywhere between $6 - $10 at any restaurant. So, if we were to make our own sandwiches from home, pre-pack them the night before and take them to work with us the next day, how much approximately would we be saving on lunch? Is it significant enough to warrant the trouble of making a sandwich? The decision is down to you.

We would need a loaf of bread ($3), cold cut meats ($6), cheese ($4), lettuce ($2), and other vegetable ingredients that is of preference. Let's estimate the total cost of the ingredients to be between $20 - $25, and the ingredients would make at least 5 – 6 sandwiches. So, that means that the cost of 1 sandwich is approximately $4 - $5, which means you get to save about $2 - $5 per day just from bringing your own pre-made sandwiches from home.

Saving even just $2 a day makes $10 a week (5 working days) and that becomes $40 a month that could potentially be put towards other purchases or even payment of bills. Just think about it, $40 a month; $480 a year – and that is just by saving on lunch. Think about all the other areas where you could save a small amount here and there that would add up to quite a significant saving over the course of a whole year.

However, many places like Subway now offer sandwiches for $5 and they are quite cheap. It might even be more worth buying instead of pre-packing from home since it doesn't cost too much. So I guess ultimately, it becomes an individual decision on whether one should pre-pack lunch from home or eat lunch out. And if your goal is to cutback so you can save some, I would certainly go for the former. You will only save if you usually eat at fancy restaurants and pay about $12 - $16 for lunch everyday but if you eat light anyway and you stick to sandwiches or spend less, then there is no point in going through all the trouble to prepare a pre-made lunch from home.

Here's to hoping that the comparison helped you in making your decision on whether to eat lunch in or eat out. Happy Lunching and happy saving!
