Finding your perfect project car is no easy task. Before you start kicking tires, you need to make a list of autos that you are looking for. Next, you need to plan your project. You are building road racer? Drifter? Drag car? These decisions will determine what car you are buying and how you build it. For example, if I built a drag car, Mustang would be my best bet. Your budget is also an important factor. How much can you afford now and what will you be able to spend later on on repairs or needed parts.
Then you need to decide what is most important to you in a new car. Most used car buyers will look at things such air conditioning, a good radio and good overall condition. My experience told me that there are 2 things that will make or break a car deal: the interior and the body. Work on the body is very expensive and good interior parts are hard to find.. In addition, don't forget that some of the most popular imported cars are almost 20 years old. A comparison of rust to cancer really a cliche, but it is a hell of a truth and so avoid it like the plague to save you a lot of money and headaches later on. Chassis rust almost a death sentence, unless you catch it early on and are ready to completely for some serious hard work to replace the bad metal. Cosmetic rust can be fixed, especially if it is caught early, but if you dig deeper, you almost always find more. Completely removing rust is not an easy task, and preventing it almost as hard. Many body shops will not remove rust, and even if they do they charge an arm and a leg for the service.
What does this mean? This means that if you find a straight, clean chassis with good interior, you should be more leniently any mechanical defects. It was a huge selling point for my Lemon CRX: axles were toast, and the interior was very poor, but the chassis has no injuries and there are only a handful of rust on the wing. The buyer is building the project, and can address these issues (especially on such a low price). Also, if you plan to do an immediate swap engines dying motor or even a non-runner can cards. Just do not forget to factor in tow. Although very careful, not cars. All that has been sitting for more than a few months can be very suspect. Also try to avoid a car when the owner does not know why he does not start.
Finally, you look everywhere for your car. Test driving is important, but if you really find the right car and you know it for sure, you can even skip the test drive. I found the right car for me. It makes a lot of heads turn, handles well and most importantly, it has a lot of power. Of course there are more work to be done, but this is what makes it my project.
