Creatures of the Night: Nightmares and Terrors
"The most anxious requests for dream interpretations come from those who've had recurring Nightmares." -YOUR DREAM TEAM. Nightmares and Terrors -- and how to conquer them...

"I dreamed that I was attending the funeral of a woman, an old friend I had gone to school with. I haven't seen her in years. As I leaned over the coffin to say goodbye, her mouth opened! A big green slimy snake crawled out of her mouth and bit me in the face! I keep having the same dream over and over. Sometimes I wake up screaming." -Pamela.

Nightmares, also called Dream Anxiety Attacks, occur to all of us. Nightmares usually happen in REM sleep during the second half of the night and are considered parasomnias. Tests show that children have them more than adults; women more than men. For adults, Nightmares are worse during times of stress and for victims of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Being chased by frightening creatures -- human or animal -- falling, drowning, moving in agonizingly slow motion, trapped in a life-threatening situation -- our Nightmares grab us and torment us and throw us suddenly into the Real World, heart pounding, sometimes sweating, or even screaming.

"What just happened?"

They've been called "The Horror Movies of the Mind," and with good reason. In ancient times, Nightmares were said to be caused by evil spirits. The word Nightmare is from the Scandinavian "nachtmara," in which it was believed a "mara" or evil spirit, would sit on the dreamer's body, leaving the dreamer oppressed and overpowered. Recent psychic research has shown there may be some truth to this. Experienced Dream Readers may be able to enter the dreams of others -- with both good and bad results! YOUR DREAM TEAM is researching this area, as well as other psychic elements of dreams.

Like most dreams, however, Nightmares may just be exploring your own life -- where you have been and where you are going. A Nightmare may just be a way of getting your attention! If you don't normally recall your dreams with much clarity, a Nightmare may just be your subconscious' way of "turning up the volume" to get a psychic message across.

In which case, an interpretation of this dream would forget the emotions of the dream and explore its CONTENT, its symbolic meaning.

On the other hand, a Nightmare can be a warning dream. A premonition. If, in your dream, you are chased by a wild, hungry animal -- that animal could represent something in your life that you should be aware of.

It's very important to have a recurring Nightmare INTERPRETED. You must understand its meaning. Just about always, once you understand the meaning -- once you have "got the message" -- the Nightmare will stop.

If you have the same Nightmare in recurring form, and an interpretation has shown that it is NOT a warning, you can stop it by Re-scripting the dream. Before going to sleep, mentally visualize the upsetting Nightmare. Consciously replay it through your mind. But this time: IMAGINE A NEW ENDING. An ending in which you defeat or dismiss the frightening element. One in which you empower yourself. You will find that this method will not only give your dream a Happy Ending... It will enable you to re-script your waking life, getting at the root cause of your anxiety and setting your life on a new course.

What, then, was Pamela's Snake Nightmare about?

When Pamela sent us her recurring dream, she had already seen a therapist about it. The therapist had told her that her dream was about "repressed sexual issues" and when the dream continued, just as intense, prescribed the tranquilizer Prazepam, "to be taken at bedtime to relieve symptoms of anxiety..."

We concluded that her dream was precognitive. A warning dream about personal betrayal. We asked her about the woman in the coffin and cautioned her about this woman. Later, Pamela informed us that the "old friend" had not only suddenly returned to town but had taken a position with the same company Pamela worked for. It wasn't very long before the "old friend" from the coffin was after Pamela's job. After that, at least, the recurring Nightmare ended.

A NOTE: In mentioning the therapist, we in no way are suggesting that if you are having troubling dreams, that you should leave a therapist and consult a Dream Reader. Just the opposite. We have suggested to dreamers that they seek therapy, if having emotional or psychological problems. They are the Best Course! In Pamela's case, it was a matter of synchronicity -- her dream needed a more spiritual interpretation, and that is where we come from. Our interest is in the psychic, the Religious, the power of Prayer, the New Spirituality... What has justly been called the Psychic Revolution. As such, we offer one way of exploring the New Age; there are others. You must seek out the one that you instinctively know is the best for you!
