Why Orlando Is Famous for Big Bass
During a recent bass fishing trip with an outdoor writer from Field and Stream I was asked the question as to why the bass in Orlando Florida are so much bigger than the bass from the North.

My initial answer was simply that our lakes here in Orlando have not only more food for the bass to feed on but much larger food. The primary forage for bass in Florida is a large Wild Shiner that is native to almost all of our lakes. Some refer to a shiner as a Golden Shiner because they turn a shiny gold color. There are various types of shiners but they all have one thing in common and that is they all get very big. In the Winter time it is common for me to use 9-12 inch shiners on my guide trips. This is what makes fishing with live bait such an experience that everyone should try at least once. There are very few places where a bass has the opportunity to eat as well as they do here in Florida!

The other important factor to note is that Florida strain Largemouths are possibly the most efficient bass of all the species. While our bass could spend all day chasing their food they choose to act solely as ambush predators and wait for the food to come to them. This benefits the bass by allowing them to feed without expending very much energy. Much like humans when a bass moves it burns energy which for them is bad because in order to grow they need this food in their body. So, by ambushing their prey they counter act effects that control a bass' metabolism such as water temperature and movement. Also, by eating a large meal the bass are able to spend the rest of the day suspending in the water column.

Just like any activity where you are pursuing your prey the more you know the more you can do to anticipate their actions. With bass in Florida the more precise you are with each cast the more chance you have of putting your lure in the ambush zone of a bass. Long casts with crankbaits, spinnerbaits or other fast moving lures just aren't as appealing as lures that mimic what they are feeding on especially when they don't have to chase it!
