Custom Picture Framers - Bespoke Framing
There are different types of picture frame: Ready Made, Custom and Bespoke. Just when you were thinking it was going to be simple, you get a choice!

Go to Web Site

If you just want to buy a frame, any good framer will have a shelf full of "Ready Made" frames., or photo frames.
Normally these will have backs held in with flexible tabs so it is an easy matter to fit your own photograph or picture.

If you need a special size, to fit your own picture, the framer will make one "to spec" - a Custom Frame. Moonshine supply custom frames all over the UK, including special ones to TV and film companies. You may have seen them on your television.

If you actuallay need something framing (rather than just want to buy a frame), you will usually get a Bespoke job. This is where the framer looks after your art, mounts it, makes a custom frame specially to fit the artwork, and incorporates a barrier layer, a dust seal, and presents the finished job ready to hang on your wall.

Bespoke frames are normally the realm of the high street framing shop, many are members of the LIFEsm (Local Independednt Framing Experts) and display the LIFE System Mark. Some are members of the Fine Art Trade Guild, or PFA (Professional Framers Association).

Many bespoke framers also operate online framing services, for custom frames (made to measure and then delivered to your door). Its important to know what you are ordering.

When ordering online you need to be sure of the size you want! If the site offers you a mesurement choice, (cm, mm or inches) use the one which you are most familiar with, or find a site which gives you a choice. If you atate a certain size, the framers should adda small allowance so that you can easily fit your picture, this allowance is also required because the artwork does expand and contract naturally according to temperature, humidity, etc.

Remember that most online framers will be fitting the picture with safety glazing (acrylic picture "glass"). Some types are better than others. Just make sure you are getting proper picture quality glazing, not just cheap plastic.

Look for an online framer who offers you a sound money back guarantee, and complies with the distance selling regulations. Strictly speaking the DSR (distance selling regulations in the UK) do not apply to items "made to spec", or if you are a trade buyer. However some online framers will give customers the extra benefit ofa 7 day money back promise for any reason, even if you simply change your mind. A reputable online framer will be pleased to show examples of their finished item, and will have a reliable delivery carrier - Moonshine use FedEx in the UK.

Lost for ideas? Have alook look on Moonshine's web site!

Some of the things that can be framed would surprise you: Not just photos, prints and pictures, but baby shoes, newspapers, records, album sleeves, CDs, dried flowers, pressed flowers, football shirts, banknotes, decoupage, ephemera, tickets, magazines, football programmes, marathon medals, flags, banners, stamps, cigarette cards, tea cards, collectors cards, film cells, cinema posters, fabric art, postcards, birthday cards....even a kilt, complete with sporran!
