Whatever level of photography you are at, mounting your photographs for display is a great way of presenting and preserving your work.
A mount protects the photo from environmental harm, ultra-violet light, and handling damage.
Many photographers sell their prints ready-mounted. A mount also gives space between the photograph and the glass when it is put in a frame.
If you are using a regular format, either digital or SLR (roll film) your photographs can be developed in standard sizes, these stock sizes can fit straight into photo mounts, or the mount can be used to "crop" the photo as desired.
Some photographers have all their photos into custom mounts, using the mount to crop the image exactly as they wish. These individual custom mounts cost slightly more, but the benefits of a picture cropped exactly the way you want it are often well worth it.
Standard size (regular) picture mounts usually fit into the off-the-shelf frame sizes which you can find in any big box store, high street photography shop etc. This is an economical solution when framing a photo.
Some photography shops sell mounts. You need to check if they are standard board (neutral ph) or acid-free. Acid free mounts are recommended for photographs. Most acid-free boards are also conservation standard. Check with your supplier.
Choose a supplier who can give you the sizes you need (or cusotm sizes), the colours you need, and the choice of board types.
Some suppliers have a minimum order. Normally this is plus VAT, and plus delivery. The longer established suppliers who are experienced in dealing with distance selling will offer you a money back promise, and fully comply with the distance selling regulations. Always make sure there is a contact phone number, a business address, and a landline telephone where you can speak to a real person if there are any problems with your order.
If a supplier is not VAT registered, it often means they wil be doing a low volume of business. You may save a few pennies in the pound, but you can be sure they will not have the experience in the business, or of course they might be new in the game -which adds up to the same thing.
A good photo mounts supplier will be using a reputable brand of board (for example arquadia mount board, or Slater Harrison Colourmount). Some use cheaper "generic" mount boards - these are often produced as white-core "own brand", but are often a lower quality than the others.
Your photo mounts can help to sell your work. If you are a professional or semi-professional photographer you always need sales! If you are an amateur, or semi professional, you still need the best presentation for your photography.
Some online suppliers also carry a range of extras - For example: dry-mountng boards (self adhesive photo mounting board) which is available in any size to your spec, or in standard photographic or picture frame sizes. Picture frames (photo frames), again standard or custom sizes, even fixing tapes, and a free instruction leaflet with each order.
If you are selling your photography in mounts you should fit a backing to the picture mount, the usual method is with double sided tape.
