A Glorious valley filled with natural beauty in the lands of Jammu & Kashmir is the Nubra Valley. The Nubra is also a tourist paradise. From Silk Route to Monasteries, the villages of Nubra provide multifarious attraction. The Indian government has recently declared its decision to permit trekking and mountain climbing in Siachen.
The Nubra Valley is one of the most famous tourist spots in Ladakh. The Nubra Valley in Ladakh is very rich and fertile, as a result of this, one will come across many gardens of colourful flowers and ample fruits. A large scale tree plantation that took place in the past a few years has given the Nubra Valley in Jammu & Kashmir, a fresher and a greener look.
Nubra Valley is very fascinating. One can easily walk through the tall green trees and grass, along babbling brooks, and then find themselves in a sandy desert filled up with doubled-humped camels by walking for just 5 minutes! The desert areas look almost like Sahara Desert regions -- except for the tall, snow-capped peaks on the either side of the valley!!
There are other myths and legends in the Nubra valley, the Panamik pond e.g. A tear-drop shaped body of water fenced on all sides by low-rising hillocks, the Panamik pond has its own myth. As local notions go, the fortunate person can see a reflection of the famed Potala Palace of Lhasa in its waters. Another belief is that whosoever completes a parikrama of the pond and makes a wish will have it fulfilled. In addition to the myth, this water body is worth seeing, especially either in the early mornings or in the evenings. It certainly is a good little walk, with a few trees along the bank offering the shade for a little shut-eye or sing-song and with a lot of cairns peppering the path and the surrounding hillocks. Though the hillocks are visible from the main road, it will take an experienced driver to tell that there is a pond hidden among them. Panamik is also well know for its hot springs.
Today, Nubra's only link to the outside world lies through the Khardung La, the greatest motoroable pass in the world; from salt to oil, everything comes through Leh. At one time a connecting Valley between Yarkand and Central Asia, nowadays, the Nubra has get converted into a dead end. With every one talking about opening the routes along the Line of Control (LOC), the lresidents of the Nubra Valley are eager to see the reopening of the old Silk Route. From Sasoma, the northmost village in the Nubra to the Karakoram Pass, there is a track even today, which was used by the traders and travellers in the old days. Today, it would take anywhere between 5 to 7 days if one has to trek from Sasoma to the Karakoram Pass.
The fascinating valley of Nubra is a wonderful spot for sight seeing in the land of Ladakh. Everybody visiting to the pleasant land of Ladakh must take some time out and make a visit to the spellbinding Nubra Valley.
