Creating a special place in your home can be as complicated as building your own Jacuzzi or as simple as soaking in a sweetly scented tub. Perhaps you already have an exercise routine at home. Having a special place to unwind can involve sitting in a chair or cozy couch in the same area you exercise. This allows you to to relax and bring your body temperature back to normal after your workout which enhances your relaxation and stress reduction.
Whether you exercise at home or elsewhere, give yourself a retreat for solitude and quiet reflection. As one mother remarked, she could handle disasters at work, emergencies with her children, and the regular routine of home as long as she had her time alone in the tub. Her place to de-stress and connect with her inner self.
Your budget may not allow all the equipment of a real "spa" but creating such a place does not require a big budget. Yes, a whirlpool is wonderful, but the basic necessity is a retreat - no matter how small. Whether you soak in a tub or relax in a massage chair after a hard day, your goal is to relax and pamper your mind and body.
Create atmosphere with soft lights and muted colors. Add furnishings that have special meaning for you -- your family, your faith -- symbols connecting us to each other.
Fragranced air can enhance the experience, especially if you use essential oils. Some oils are known for relaxation while others are invigorating and bring energy. Combinations of essential oils create a synergy, increasing the effect of the individual oils. Bath salts or oils, body scrubs, or even a simple back brush in the shower followed by a body mist are simple ways to transform the ordinary cleansing ritual to another level.
Simple and inexpensive additions to the healing power of water include a few drops of essential oil, tablespoons of baking soda, Epsom salts, and herbs such as rosemary. Cleanse with products full of natural nourishment for your skin and try to avoid products that dry and leave your skin taut. There are many books available with simple ideas and recipes - you just have to adapt them for your personal taste and lifestyle. If relaxing in a tub fragrant with bath salts is not your choice, adapt suggestions to work for you. Instead of a tub you might love a brisk shower with a special shower head using a real sea wool sponge and a fragrant body scrub.
One of the favorite treatments at a spa is a wonderful massage, but the healing touch of massage can be cost prohibitive. Though it was not in my budget to have a massage on a regular basis, for several years I requested a massage gift certificate from my husband for Christmas or anniversary. Several years ago at our niece's baby shower, my sister and I gave her a massage gift certificate. To say she was pleased is an understatement.
An inexpensive alternative to a spa is a massage school where students use you for practice. Of course, the downside is there is no choice of students and their abilities can vary. Another alternative is mechanical massagers. Even though they are not on the same level as the human touch, they are therapeutic. My sister and her husband bought a massage chair. Every evening they take turns sitting for fifteen minutes and having a back massage. A relaxing way to end the day.
I hope a few of these ideas will challenge your creative mind to explore how you can create your own special place.
