The combination of sea salts and water has been the basis of therapy for thousands of years. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, discovered the therapeutic qualities of seawater by noticing the healing affects it had on the injured hands of fishermen. The seawater not only restricted infection risks, but also promoted pain relief. It is now known that sea salt therapy is an effective treatment that assists in the rejuvenation of the cells and also induces a healthy exchange of minerals and toxins between the blood and the water.
Historically many spas originated near natural mineral springs around the world as it was noted that it brought relief to bathers. Sites of ancient mineral springs were used ten thousand years ago. The minerals in the springs vary by location. Thomas Jefferson made regular trips to Hot Springs in Virginia where he designed America's first bath house. Franklin Delano Roosevelt made frequent trips to Hot Springs, Georgia for therapy in dealing with the effects of polio.
Today, there are numerous types of water therapy administered at spas and health clinics around the world. Cold showers can stimulate the body, reduce temperature, and overcome fatigue. Sports therapy clinics use hydrotherapy baths to help patients recover from joint and muscle injuries. Warm therapeutic water is used for recreational and cultural programs as well as exercise. Clean air and natural surroundings increase the sense of well being aiding in the physical, emotional, and spiritual regeneration.
Over time, combinations of certain waters and botanical products were developed as herbs, plants, flowers or leaves, oils and infusions were added to baths . The effects of the botanicals were intensified by the addition of salt. Salt from different areas of the world contain the minerals of their origin. All are beneficial. The Dead Sea salts are used world wide in baths due to the intense mineral concentration. Please note that the Dead Sea minerals are not to be ingested. Today spas often add natural aromas of flowers and essential oils to complement the healing effect of the water. If the water source does not contain minerals, they are added by using salts.
Many bath salts are available in a variety of fragrances. Perfume rather than essential oil is not necessarily bad for you unless you are sensitive to perfume. Essential oils can be better because they add to the salt's benefits. The aromatherapy is added to the healing of warm water and salts and minerals. All Comfort Spring Station products containing essential oil state it in product description.
Products used for bathing often include sea salt, essential oils, moisturizers, and other botanicals. A mixture is best for relieving pain, reducing swelling, and increasing circulation. Bicarobonate of soda and Epsom salt are two inexpensive water conditioners that bring much relief as well as exfolating the skin and softening the water.
Another popular skin treatment is natural masks. Clays and muds from around the world have been used for centuries for skin purification and rejuvenation. Spas often offer mud baths and skin wraps using natural ingredients, such as sea weed. Research indicates components of sea weed exfoliate the skin and increase circulation. Beauty products have been developed using sea weed such as the Sea Algae Exfoliating Spa Soap at Comfort Spring Station.
