THE PROGRAM

The Salem International University Degree Completion Program is designed for students who have been out of high school for five years or more and who want to complete a bachelor's degree program. Students can complete their degree using a combination of transfer credit, military credit, CLEP or proficiency credits, and portfolio credit. There is no limit on how these credits are combined. Students must complete thirty-six or more hours at SIU, fulfill the graduation requirements and complete a major. The SIU plan can be completed on a full-time or part-time basis.

The standards for academic progress and grading are the same for all SIU students. Students who have not been successful in earlier college level work will be admitted on a case-by-case basis. Students must have either a high school diploma or a GED. Students are required to submit transcripts from all high school and college level work attempted.

Transfer Credits are accepted from all regionally accredited colleges and universities provided that the grade earned is a "C" or better in an area applicable to the SIU degree program.

Military Credit may be applicable to the SIU degree and will be evaluated by the Registrar.

CLEP Credit can be earned by testing and earning a score that is equivalent to a "C" or better. There is a fee to take the CLEP test and a registration fee for the course to be entered on the transcript. The details are outlined in the College Catalog.

Proficiency Credit may be available. Students should meet with the advisor in the area for which the student is seeking proficiency credit to determine what courses, if any, can be evaluated by proficiency testing. Students will pay full tuition for any course that they earn credit for through proficiency testing manner.

Portfolio Credit is earned from life acquired learning that is equivalent to course credit available at SIU. Students are responsible for demonstrating that they have learned the equivalent of the materials offered in courses available at SIU. Students document learning and provide support materials that are appropriate. There is a flat fee of $200 for evaluating and recording all credits earned through this process. A guide to the process is available to students. Advisors will work with students to ensure that the portfolio submitted will be of merit.

The degree requirements are:

* 120 semester credit hours with a cumulative grade point average of 2.25 or better.
* Complete a major approved by a faculty member of the department in which the degree is being offered.
* Complete the equivalent of the International CORE and the competency requirements as determined in consultation with the Registrar and academic advisor.
* Carry out the equivalent of the service component required of all SIU graduates.

Students should contact the Admissions Office at: Admissions@SalemIU.edu or by calling 1-800-283-4562 or (304) 782-5336. For more information on this program visit our Handbook for Portfolio Credit Page.
