The town of Bansko is situated by the Glazne River at the north-eastern foothills of Pirin beneath the highest and most beautiful karsts part of the mountain. It is 160 km south of Sofia , 60 km south-east of Blagoevgrad, 6 km south of Razlog. Bansko is the entrance to the most beautiful Bulgarian Mountain – Pirin and one of the biggest winter resorts in the country. This historical town is located at 925 m above sea level. If one adds to this its architectural and historical value, Bansko is a pearl in the Bulgarian necklace. Bansko practically offers unlimited opportunities in this respect satisfying visitors of different financial status. All hotels have preserved the town's typical style helping the tourists to enjoy the atmosphere of ages gone long ago. There are a lot of sights of great interest like the basilica and the necropolis in the Shipotsko Area, Bansko karst springs in the area of Murtva Polyana, a ceramic workshop dating back to late antiquity, the Stana Kale Fortress of late antiquity and a necropolis, a Tracian fortress and necropolis together with early Christian basilica in St. Nikola area, Tracian mound in the area of Lisicha Mogila, the Birth of the Holy Virgin Church. The mountain has 44 snow guns working to cover 80 percent of the skiing surface. It is a snowboarder's paradise with a newly established snowboard park. Night skiing is available on well-lit ski runs. Bansko provides a unique combination of great skiing and cosy Bulgarian Revival Period atmosphere. The local taverns charm locals and visitors with style, traditional music, local cuisine, and a good selection of wines.
