One of the most exciting times to be in Ixtapa/ Zihuatanejo is in the spring, during the annual International Guitar Festival. For a full week, just before or after Easter, Zihuatanejo is host to a bevy of great musicians of all genres. There are concerts each weekend and during the week music lovers can choose between a variety of dinner and bar shows where the festival musicians play to select and limited crowds. The Guitar Festival is in benefit of local music education and community projects.
Another great community event is the Zihuatanejo Sailfest for the boating crowd. Cruisers and visitors to Zihua can join in the fun with races and contests, cookouts, music, a sail parade and a lot more. All proceeds go local educational charitable causes. Sailfest happens annually the last days of January and first days of February.
The beaches of the area are fantastic. Around the bay toward the south of Zihuatanejo town lie Playas Madera and La Ropa. La Madera is a small beach area lined with bungalows, hotels and guest houses. Playa La Ropa, which is a long, white-sanded beach that curves around the southern side of the bay and then toward the crags that lead to Las Gatas, offers its visitors a variety of hotels, bungalows, restaurants and water sports, including parasailing, kayaking, water skiiing and banana baoting – just in case lying out and lazing in the sun beside the waves isn’t enough for you. At Playa Las Gatas, you'll find a gently lapping sea protected by the ancient breakwater, making it an excellent beach for children or activities such as snorkeling.
Ixtapa offers the visitor a stretch of more intense and wild surf along Playa el Palmar, it's main beach. To the south is the Westin Las Brisas Hotel commandeering the more protected Playa Vista Hermosa. Northward along Playa el Palmar, next to the jetty, is Playa Escolleras, a favorite spot for local surfers and, farther along, are Playa Quieta and Playa Linda - another surfer's hangout and, from whence boats can take visitors across to the splendid sands and snorkeling spots of Isla Ixtapa.
Surfing has become a popular sport in the area, and there are a number of excellent surfing breaks to both the north and south of Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo for both longboarders and shortboarders. The area is known as one of the best sportfishing regions in the world, and year round fishermen enjoy the waters, pulling in marlin, sailfish, roosterfish, dorado, tuna and more.
Beach horseback riding in a fabulous way to explore the area. Riding horses are available for hire on Playa Larga to the south of Zihuatanejo, and on Playa Linda, to the north of Ixtapa. Tour operators can arrange outings to nearby villages as well as along the tremendous expanses of these nearby beaches, where you can watch the dolphins cavorting happily in the powerful surf.
To the south of town lie the Barra de Potosi and Valentin lagoons. These lowland waterways are lined with mangroves and are the habitat of a great many tropical water birds. Kayak tours are offered into these regions and they are truly an activity not to miss. As one glides silently over the placid waters of the lagoon, one can watch the herons, egrets, roseate spoonbills, pelicans, cormorants and grebes at close quarters.
Further information on these activities and more are all available on the website.
