Go to Web Site

Description: Establishing a web presence is meaningless unless you use search engine marketing to drive surfers to your site.

It is here, right now…the future. Although there are still millions of Americans who are intimidated or simply uninterested in the Internet, it just does not matter. The fact is that the web is growing in both reach and power and those businesses or people who do not get on board and establish a web presence risk being left behind and face a gloomy economic future. But even people who are Internet savvy fail to realize the importance of the search engines and what role they play in directing traffic on the Information Superhighway.

Simply put, a search engine is what directs people to websites when they do not know the URL. Surfers simply type into the search engine what they are looking for and it gives them a listing of sites it believes to be most relevant to your search. Keywords are at the heart of the search engine universe. These are the words that a search engine combs the Internet looking for after you type them into the computer. Every single page in the search engine’s directory is combed for that word and all of them with that word are brought up on the results screen.

Not only does the search engine find all the pages with your keyword on them, it goes to the trouble of ranking them for you. By using very complicated formulas, the search engine can actually determine which pages are most likely to give you the information you need. Those sites that are deemed to have the most relevant information will show up first in the search. Clearly, you want your site to come up first on the search engine results or at least on the first page which generally has ten results, or websites listed.

Establishing a web presence is a great first step but if you cannot get your site to come up on that first page of results then it is very unlikely you will get much traffic to your site. The reason for this is because nearly 90% of Internet users get to sites through search engines. Therefore, you either need to have a killer site with loads of great content that has been keyword optimized or you need to have a web presence on a site that already has the content and traffic.

Now there are sites out there that will in fact allow you to market your services on their site—for a fee. Even people who might not think that they necessarily have a business in the traditional sense can benefit greatly from a web presence. Take a musician, for example. People can sell their songs on sites like www.entertomusic.com without ever having any record deal. The same is true for writers and a number of other professions. The alternative is to establish a site yourself but this can be both time consuming and moderately expensive depending on what you wanted to do with the site.

The fact is that search engine marketing is here to stay. More and more people are shopping for the things they want online and if you fail to establish a web presence soon then it really may be too late. Those sites ranking well in the search engines are literally adding content every week which makes it that much harder to catch them and get your own site ranked in the top ten. So, if you have decided that it is time to establish your own web presence, just don’t forget to take those search engines into account because you might very well be wasting your effort otherwise!
