Crewel Jewel - Antique & Vintage Never Die
Vintage ladies handkerchiefs make a wonderful collectible. But people often ask me, "What do you do with them?"

What ever happened to hankies? They just don't make them like they used to. My fascination with hankies began a long time ago when I received a hanky as a gift from my grandmothers. Today, my fascination is the thrill of the hunt for finding some of those buried treasures that people never used. You know the type of person I'm talking about. They tuck things away in a drawer with the idea of saving it for a special occasion.... Kind of like a time capsule - in a way.

Many of these sentimental linens of yesteryear are made of colorful ladylike fabrics. Others have fancy embroidery or crochet along the edges. The more detailing, the higher the price will be when you buy them piece by piece. Handwork is generally more desirable than machine made examples. Hankies in their original decorated gift boxes still turn up from time to time. You can still find affordable handkerchiefs at flea markets, antique shops, and online for prices ranging from .50 to a few dollars. There are more expensive hankies, intended more for collectors which can be priced at anywhere from $5.00 to over $100.00!

So, people often ask me, "What do you do with them?" There are many modern-day uses for vintage handkerchiefs other than their original use as cloths to blow your nose! Basically, any way you use fabric, you can use a lady's handkerchief.

Aside from the obvious, hankies can be displayed as doilies on tables & nightstands, framed and hung on a wall or under glass on a coffee table. A “bouquet” of floral decorated vintage handkerchiefs can be tucked into a vase for an arrangement that's always in bloom. Colorful hankies can also be used as basket liners in a bedroom or bath. If you're the crafty type of person, hankies are perfect to use in making quilts, pillows, sachets, potholders, curtain valance, doll clothes, and whatnot. As a fashion accessory, tie a handkerchief onto your ponytail, belt loop, pocket, or purse. Some people even make aprons out of hankies! Additional uses: sachets filled with lavender or potpourri, wrap small gifts, cocktail napkins, ornaments, fabric shades for lamps or nightlights.

Hankies with greetings such as "Happy Birthday", "Best Wishes", "Congratulations", "Bon Voyage", "Mother", "Thank You", and others can be found to fit the occassion. You can always fit a hanky into birthday cards, get well cards, or any holiday cards. There are monogrammed hankies that can be used for more personal gifts... "something old" or "something blue" for a bride to be, gifts for bridesmaids, flower girls, mother of the bride or groom. Some handkerchiefs were designed with tips and advice printed on them, like "How to Speak French (Italian, Spanish)", and "Calories", to name a few.

These are just some of the hankies available, and ideas for how to use them. Not to mention the holiday hankies, political hankies, and souvenir hankies. There is a handkerchief for everybody. You just have to look for it, because it's out there somewhere.

Oh, and I almost forgot! ... come here ... come closer. Here's a little secret... they don't take up much room. So, start your own collection!
