Just having your website for traffic exchange is not enough to get yourself noticed. Reciprocal linking is the most effective way of driving targeted mass numbers of visitors to your website. However in order to improve your search engine rankings, you will have to exchange links with similar sites which are of more value to your site.
WHY?
Some of the many advantages when you link your website with other website link's directories around the world are:
1. Increase your site's exposure by having thousands of incoming links from websites all over the world.
2. Improve your search engine ranking and positioning.
Page ranking goes up with the numbers of links that you have, but if the links come from a similar website with relevant content, your page will rank higher on the search engine hierarchy. Being highly and permanantly visible is a vital aset to the long-term growth of your business.
But, If you exchange link just for search engine ranking, than you are throwing away thousands of FREE visitors to your website, spending money you don't have to, and worse, wasting your time. I suggest you forget about search engine rankings and start building a bunch of good reciprocal linkings to drive more free traffic to your own site.

First, try to target websites to link with by visiting major search engines such as Google or Yahoo. The advantages of these two site is their popularity. Second, link with sites where their "Resources" or "Links" are easy to find. Do you want to link with sites with tiny text links at the bottom of their pages? Or spend hours to find their reciprocal linking pages? I believe you don't. Try to advertise your reciprocal links section so that they are easy to find and viewable. After that, you will have to submit a link request to the webmaster of that particular site.
