Our Accreditation
We are proud of our status as an accredited university, as well as our leadership role in elevating the quality of online education nationwide.
Accreditation is an important credential to look for when choosing a university. If you have credits to transfer from another accredited institution, you will want to make sure both schools have accreditation that allows you to transfer credits back and forth. Accreditation is also important for your degree to be widely recognized by employers and professional associations. Accreditation is an assurance to students and the public that an institution meets or exceeds standards for quality of faculty, curriculum, learner services, and fiscal stability.
Capella University's Accreditation
Capella University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA), 30 N. LaSalle, Suite 2400, Chicago, IL 60602-2504, (312) 263-0456, www.ncahigherlearningcommission.org . The Higher Learning Commission grants regional accreditation, the type most common for major public, state, and private universities.
Leading the Way for Quality Online Education
In 2000, Capella University became the first online academic institution to become a charter participant of the Academic Quality Improvement Project (AQIP) of the NCA. AQIP participants commit to a program of continuous quality improvement (CQI) similar to initiatives practiced in private industry.
AQIP provides an alternative model of accreditation maintenance with The Higher Learning Commission. Instead of the traditional 10-year review cycle, AQIP participants adhere to an ongoing annual review regimen. By participating in AQIP, Capella is required to analyze its operational processes and measure outcomes within each of nine different quality criteria, and to set ambitious performance goals, such as converting all its courses to an outcomes/competency-based model.
What Types of Accreditation are Available?
Regional accreditation agencies accredit public and private, non-profit and for-profit, and undergraduate and graduate institutions in the United States. Capella University has this type of accreditation.
Specialized and professional accrediting organizations accredit specific programs or schools such as law and business schools, or programs in educational administration and teacher education. For example, the American Counseling Association's Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) has accredited Capella's mental health counseling specialization in the School of Human Services.
National accrediting bodies accredit a wide variety of institutions, most frequently single-purpose institutions (e.g., flight schools), private career institutions, and religiously-affiliated colleges and universities.
Our Faculty
We recognize that our academic reputation rests on the quality of our faculty. We recruit high-caliber instructors - many of whom also teach at traditional universities around the country - and we provide them training in online methods to help ensure a rich, engaging experience for both faculty and learners.
More than 70% of the faculty at Capella hold doctoral degrees, and all have extensive experience in their field. They come to Capella because they truly enjoy teaching, because they embrace online education, and because they value the high-caliber experience Capella University makes possible.

History of Capella University
Two visionaries, both driven to create a barrier-free university for working adults, founded the University more than a decade ago. Headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Capella University employs more than 550 administrative staff personnel, and more than 650 faculty members.
It all started when Stephen Shank, former CEO of Tonka Corporation, saw an opportunity to offer higher education in a convenient format to allow working adults to earn degrees without the boundaries and restrictions of traditional universities. He envisioned a high quality university that people could attend from remote locations, including their homes or wherever they might be traveling, at times that were convenient to them.
In 1993, Shank found a partner who shared his vision. Dr. Harold Abel, an experienced leader in higher education and former president of three universities, joined Shank to found The Graduate School of America. Originally, the university offered online master's and doctoral degrees in management, education, and human services.
In 1997, the university achieved accreditation from The Higher Learning Commission and became a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA ), a body that accredits many major public and private universities. Shortly after becoming accredited, the university changed its name to Capella University and established the five schools that exist today: education, business and technology, human services, psychology, and undergraduate studies.
Today, Capella University offers more than 650 courses and undergraduate and graduate degree programs in nearly 70 specialized areas of study. Capella's more than 12,000 learners include a diverse group of primarily working adults from all walks of life, including learners throughout the United States and around the world–learners who have experienced, firsthand, Stephen Shank's vision for a barrier-free, high-quality education.
