Some History…
The baby shower originated in the early 1800’s and received its name from the “showering” of gifts and love for the expectant mother. This began as a tea party for women who would share the day with the mom to be and her female family members. As tea and treats were served, gifts for the new arrival were given; they often were items of necessity as well as beautiful handmade creations.

A Time of Fun…
Having a baby shower is a wonderful way for friends and family to celebrate the impending birth of a child. This is a fun time for all especially the expectant mother who gets to enjoy an exciting time filled with friends, family, food and gifts. This fun filled event doesn’t need to be difficult, with just a little planning; you can turn this thrilling time into a huge success. A good rule of thumb is to allow yourself six weeks for the preparation of the baby shower. If you don’t have the luxury of that much time, serious planning and quick decision making can turn your shower into an outstanding time had by all. Organization is the key to success so get out your notebook and start planning!

Setting the Date…
Setting the date is the most important as well as perhaps the most difficult part of the planning. A baby shower usually takes place in the last three months of the pregnancy; however, some may choose to celebrate after the baby is born. Having the shower after the baby is born allows guests to choose gifts specifically for the baby as the name and gender are already known. This is also a great time for many family and friends to visit the mother and meet the baby instead of individually visiting the mother and baby at home. If the baby shower is to be held before the child is born, plan the shower approximately four to six weeks before the due date. It is better to have the party sooner rather than later.

Surprise or not…
At this time, it is also important to decide if this shower will be a surprise or not. If you are planning a surprise shower, take the time to talk to family members, as they will be key players in the planning. If there are friends and family coming from out of town, an evening through the week will not suit. Similarly, if there are people working in the daytime, a weekday afternoon will not work. Contacting important guests especially those from out of town to discuss a date is a wonderful idea. Generally a weekend afternoon seems to be the most suitable and convenient time. Coordinating a date that suits everyone is next to impossible so whether it is a surprise shower or a traditional one, the bottom line will be the expectant mother’s schedule which will decide the date and time that are best suited for her.
