Web Design is a complex business. Anyone setting up a web design company has to be good at sales, design, functionality, customer services, promotion and many other skills. So web design can be very difficult but can also be very rewarding if you get it right! But getting it right can be very stressful when you have the pressure of a deadline and a client expecting their job to be the top priority. To help you along here are my top five web design business tips:
1) At number one is the old classic, 'The customer is always right' - while you may think your idea for the site design is best, at the end of the day you are there to provide a web design the client will be happy with! However, do offer your opinions to the client, afterall the end product will end up in your web design portfolio and define your web design company.
2) Promote, promote, promote. With so many web design companies out there it can be a fierce struggle to the top, but once your there trust me it doesnt get any easier. So a clear promotion strategy for your web design company is vital. Best places to advertise are localised search engines and directories. Also, become active in web design forums!
3) Get your website design right! We all know a web design can speak a billion words, but when your a web designer your website doesn't only speak for you it defines your company as a whole - so get it right. The best form of site is some sort of hybrid, using as many techniques as possible showing off the range of your skills - but dont throw in all the bells and whistles, this could create a mess. Also it is a good idea to develop a flash intro but dont put it as your index page! Put a link to it inside your site, perhaps in your web design portfolio.
4) Web design business partnerships. These can be most productive, especially if they are international and involve a trade of web design expertise. In fact one of my own web design business partnerships was so effective that it led to a merger of the two web design companies involved! So rather than compete with every other design company out there, treating every other web designer as the enemy - cooperate - it will be more rewarding in the end!
5) Now this is perhaps the most important of all - Don't stress it! Relax, maintain a good sense of humour and you will be able to deal with any web design problem that hits you - from a design that won't come together to a web design client from hell - the key to sorting out the problems is staying relaxed. Also for client problems, remember to record all conversations with the client and emails - VERY IMPORTANT!
