I quote from a recent article in the Washington Times, “Former CIA Director George J. Tenet yesterday called for new security measures to guard against attacks on the United States that use the Internet, which he called "a potential Achilles' heel," "I know that these actions will be controversial in this age when we still think the Internet is a free and open society with no control or accountability," he told an information-technology security conference in Washington, "but ultimately the Wild West must give way to governance and control" The former CIA director said telecommunications -- and specifically the Internet -- are a back door through which terrorists and other enemies of the United States could attack the country, even though great strides have been made in securing the physical infrastructure. The Internet "represents a potential Achilles' heel for our financial stability and physical security if the networks we are creating are not protected," Mr. Tenet said.
“My IT Manager says we have a firewall and we have Anti Virus on every computer, our WEB sites have security, we are fine? Why should I worry?” Did you ever have a wallet stolen? Car or Home broken into? If not you’re lucky, but imagine the same thing happening to your company, effecting every employee. Putting blinkers on will not reduce computer crime! Don’t let anyone ruin what you have worked very hard to build, just for the sake of some adjustments to your infrastructure!
The FBI knows what they are talking about; they have spent more time and money on surveying and testing the security of this country than anyone else. Look at 2004, by the middle of the year hackers/thieves (Black hats we like to call them) have stolen $204 Million in North America. This is not counting, property theft, damage via viruses or internet worms, Denial of Service attacks, loss of salary due to an inoperable network. All the companies that this has happened to had Firewalls and anti Virus Software. We would be happy to show you FBI documented evidence.
Firewalls are like a car alarm, they are a good deterrent and that’s about it. Be happy, at least you have a firewall and anti-virus, you do have them right? They are configured and operating properly right? Firewalls have to have holes in them to see and retrieve information from the outside world. Look at it this way, if you are in a war zone, chemical weapons everywhere and you have a hole in your chemical suit, is that a problem?
You can of course be targeted for a direct Hack, but this is less common and the Hackers are usually after something specific, or want to ‘get you’ for a reason. Despite what Hollywood says Hackers can not penetrate your system from the outside in 60 seconds, (Inside it can be done in about 20 minutes) very few people can do it at all and it takes weeks of research and attempts before a Hack can be successful. But can they get you? Oh yes, all they need is a reason.
Internal employees are by far the most common attacks, and usually come from employees. Steeling data and taking it to another employer, this is nothing new, but just imagine how much information can fit on a portable USB port (a small port on the side of your laptop or desktop computer) device that fits on a key ring? These things are $30 at Radio Shack! Or what is stopping an employee from deleting shared information? Purposely downloading a virus from web based email? Pirating software or distributing MP3’s from your network and then reporting your company for copyright violations. This is just scratching the surface, we could write pages and pages on internal attacks. Suffice to say, these attacks can cost you dearly.
