If acid reflux is ruled out by your doctor, consider these other common digestive ailments:
* Peptic ulcer. This condition is often confused with reflux, but it's distinctly different. People generally feel upper abdominal pain instead of burning in their chest. Eating may bring relief.
* Non-ulcer dyspepsia. This is a catchall term for a recurring upper abdominal pain for which no cause is found. Symptoms mimic a stomach ulcer. Sometimes, antibiotics are given to eradicate bacteria that contribute to the problem. Dyspepsia occasionally resolves itself without any need for medical intervention.
* Irritable bowel syndrome. Sufferers are often plagued with abdominal cramps, bloating, constipation, or painless diarrhea. No one knows causes this condition. It is often triggered by stress, or by eating certain foods.
* Excess gas. Belching and flatulence won't kill you, but they may make you want to die of embarrassment. One easy remedy: Cut down on carbonated drinks, which contain gas bubbles. You can also limit foods that create gas in the intestines, such as beans, cabbage, and broccoli.

Many people have occasional heartburn. It can be triggered by eating a heavy meal, or it may strike once or twice for no apparent reason. These fleeting attacks are usually no cause for concern.
Frequent heartburn, on the other hand, may signal underlying gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a serious condition. This type of persistent discomfort usually doesn't go away on its own.
The one exception is pregnancy. Most pregnant women experience heartburn because their internal organs are battling for space with the baby. Most cases disappear after birth.
However, if you have over-the-counter antacids tucked in your car's glove box, in a desk drawer at work, or on your bed stand, it's probably time to see a doctor. Stockpiling pills is a good indication you need medical help, says Dr. Walter J. Hogan, a gastroenterologist at Medical College of Wisconsin. Other signs of GERD include uncontrolled regurgitation, a recurrent sore throat, an unexplained cough, waking frequently at night, and discomfort that steadily gets worse. Find a specialist in treating GERD because it can be tricky to diagnose.
