When shopping for an inkjet printer, there is one thing that you should remember. It is the price of the ink that you should evaluate more than the price of the printer. This is one thing that many printer shoppers look past, so as a result they end up buying a HP or Lexmark printer. This is because HP and Lexmark sell their printers very cheap, usually less than the price of both of the ink cartridges for it. These two companies also charge the most for ink and try to prohibit 3rd party ink manufacturers from making compatible ink. So they way they have it, they are pratically giving away the printer and making all of their money off of ink sales. That is the reason you should go with an Epson or Canon printer. They may cost more at the store, but you will be saving a lot of money over the lifespan of the printer. For Epson and Canon printers, you can buy third part compatible inkjet cartridges at a fraction of the price that the printer companies charge. It is the same quality and you will save a lot of money. Let's say you go through 12 black inkjet cartridges a year and 8 color cartridges. If you had a Lexmark printer, let's see how much you would be spending on ink:
12 Black Cartridges x Average $30 per cartridge = $360/year
8 Color Cartridges x Average $35 per cartridge=$280/year
Total black and color = $640/year
Now let's say you keep the printer for 3 years, maintaining this same usage. Your overall cost of ink over these three years will be $1920! Compare that to the $50 price of the printer. The cost of the ink is 384% greater than the cost of the priner. Now, let's see how much you would spend using Canon compatible cartridges.
12 Black Cartridges x Average $5 per cartridge = $60/year
8 Color Cartridges x Average $7 per cartridge = $56/year
Total black and color: $116/year
Now let's say you keep this for 3 years as well, it will cost you $348 to buy ink over the lifespan of the printer. That's $300 LESS than the cost of 1 year of Lexmark ink, Now compare the $348 to the $100 for the printer. That is just 3.48% greater. See how much more cost effective it is to buy compatible ink with a Canon or Epson printer. Epson has made many claims to try to make people believe that compatible inkjet cartridges aren't as good quality, but I have found those to be completely false. They are just trying to keep people buying their ink because third part manufacturers pose a huge threat to them. Lexmark has successfully sued manufacturers who make compatible ink for their printers, claiming that they are infringing their copyright on the technology of the cartridges. Some HP compatible ink does exist, but it isn't much cheaper than retail, and is very hard to find. So if you hear printer companies trying to put down the quality of compatible ink, know that they are just trying to keep people purchasing their ink so they can keep making lots of money from the sale of their ink. So next time you are shopping for a new printer, I'd suggest and I have these numbers to back me up, to go with an Epson or Canon. If you are shopping for an office printer, Brother and Xerox also have compatible ink at a fraction of the cost of retail.
