The Truth About Hormone Replacement Therapy
Menopause occurs when a woman stops ovulating. Because of a reduction in the production of female hormones such as oestrogen, FSH (Follicular stimulating hormone) and LH (Luteinizing hormone),

the monthly periods (menstruation) cease. It is a natural event that marks the end of the reproductive years which normally lasts for a period of about 35 years. Very often menopause does not occur suddenly but menstruation becomes scanty and irregular and then finally ends. Menopause occurs at different times in a woman’s life but can happen between the ages of 42 years and 58years. It is most common around the age of 50years.

Symptoms and conditions associated with Menopause
There are a number of unpleasant symptoms that are associated with the onset of menopause. They occur in different intensity with different women, and some are fortunate not to have any symptoms at all. Some of the features of menopause:

Short term unpredictable vasodilation with hot flashes, sweating and palpitations.

Night sweats.

The sex organs dry and atrophy.

Osteoporosis – Osteoporosis occurs in 50% of postmenopausal women, but it is often undetected at the early stages.

An added risk of cardiovascular disease

Episodes of unpredictable behaviour.

When your hormones are in balance, you feel great – lots of energy, you sleep like a baby, your sex drive is strong, you look wonderful, and your immune and digestive systems function beautifully.

This is your body’s normal state. And with proper support you should feel that way from your 20’s through your 70’s – and even beyond.

The Risks of Hormone Replacement Therapy
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is medication containing one or more female hormones, commonly estrogen plus progestin (synthetic progesterone). Some women receive estrogen-only therapy (usually women who have had their uterus removed).

HRT is most often used to treat symptoms of menopause such as "hot flashes," vaginal dryness, mood swings, sleep disorders, and decreased sexual desire. This medication may be taken in the form of a pill, a patch, or vaginal cream.

For decades, women have taken Hormone Replacement Therapy, such as Prempro, Premarin and Premphase, to reduce the symptoms of menopause. For years doctors believed the long-term use of hormone replacement therapy drugs were safe and protected against osteoporosis and heart disease. However, recent studies now show that hormone replacement therapy places women at a higher risk for breast cancer, heart attack, stroke, blood clots, ovarian cancer, gallbladder cancer, lupus and scleroderma.

The Women's Health Initiative study, a $700 million, eight year publicly funded study of the benefits of hormone replacement therapy, was stopped three years earlier than planned because of the risks associated with these drugs. On July 9, 2002, the National Institute of Health halted the study because the overall risks of the drugs exceeded any health benefits. Specifically, the study found that there was a higher incidence of serious injury for women who took Prempro compared to those who received a placebo as follows:

26% increase in breast cancer

29% increase in heart attacks

22% increase in total cardiovascular disease

41% increase in strokes

a doubling of rates of blood clots

Additionally, researchers have concluded that long-term use of estrogen may increase the risk of ovarian cancer by as much as 60 percent.

Natural Alternative
Although much more gentle, there are natural alternatives that provide relief for menopausal women and are not associated with the same risks.

Phytoestrogens (Plant based oestrogens) provide plant compounds which yield natural hormones. Examples are isoflavones found in soy, beans and peas; lignans found in fruit, vegetables, grains and oilseeds; and coumestans found in plants such as alfalfa and broccoli.

These natural phytoestrogens are also found in reasonable quantities in plants such as Black Cohosh and Red Clover. It has been found that these plants reduce the symptoms associated with menopause.

It is also necessary during the menopausal period to supplement with helpful nutrients. The nutrients include the essential fatty acids, Beta Carotene, Vitamin B6, Vitamin E and Chromium. The intention with these nutrients is to support heart function and prevent coronary heart disease, to protect the eyes from deterioration and the formation of cataracts, to protect against sugar disorders such as metabolic syndrome and diabetes and to maintain a high immune level to protect against chronic disorder.
