I have been suffering with a very bad back and at first the doctor put me on prescription drugs, which I might add only did the job of knocking me to sleep and making me feel depressed.
As a believer in alternative medicines, these essential oils have been a great help. My daughter has been taught by me on the art of massage and has been a huge help too, with the essential oil massages.
I have been having warm oil baths and some of the essential oils mentioned below are great for the aches and pains, so here goes with a review for you to read.
Essential oils are now widely used for massage and in our baths, the healing properties of essential oils is recognised as an alternative therapy.
As part of a trend for non drug based medicine, essential oils have become widely used for treatments instead of traditional medicine, a natural medicine for the modern society. I personally think that they have done me more good than the medicines my doctor prescribed for my bad back as I have been able to have hands on treatment via massage for the aches and pains of back strain.
Essential oils are easily available from health shops and are used to help cure ailments or just to relax and give people a feeling of well-being.
You can also use them as a relaxing prelude to sex a way of getting your partner to unwind and become closer to each other.
There are many uses for essential oils, from relaxation to finding inner peace and exploring one's deeper self, or massage for healing to massage with your partner to become closer and more bonded to each other, or to create the mood for love.
Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils for healing. Both for the body and for the mind.
There are different ways of using the essential oils and we will go through them so that you can use them if you want to try alternative methods of healing or relaxation.
Massage.
This is a great way to relax, or a great relief for aches and pains as well as being good for the circulation and the loosening of tight muscles, massage is also a soothing healing technique and can help you to bond closely to your loved one. It can set the mood for lovemaking or just relax you after a long days work.
To use massage with essential oils, you will have to buy a base oil. This can be bought at the health shop for around four pounds. Not a lot really for the benefits you will get from the massage and this oil will last for quite a few massages.
Take a small bowl and put a little base oil in the bottom, add two or three drops of your chosen essential oil into the base oil and mix around. This is now ready to use when massaging. You can also combine essential oils if you are suffering with one or more symtoms. Some essential oils compliment others to relax and unwind you or to uplift your spirits and refresh your mind.
Spread the prepared oil onto your fingers and hands, the gently and slowly begin to massage the person's skin, moving in little circles or slowly moving up and down, from side to side and gently making little sausage shapes with the skin under your fingers, this has to be done very slowly and with no pressure. gently kneading the muscles beneath the skin, do not use pressure as this could cause damage to the muscle or discomfort to the person you are massaging.
Essential oils can be used together with the oil, more than one mixed together in the oil can work to ease pains or just relax you. There are lots of books available to tell you which essential oil is best for whatever ails you.
They must not be put onto the skin neat, always mix with a base oil.
When massaging the legs always us an upward movement and do not massage varocose veins, when massaging the neck the person receiving the massage should be sat on a chair. Try not to jerk the head around only gentle massage is needed for the neck as it's a sensative area.
Bathing.
This is probably the most best known way of using essential oils, a few drops in your hot bath water will quickly relax and sooth away your aches and pains.
There is also the added benefit of the essential oils evaperating so that they get inhailed into your system. You can get different oils to ease pains if you have been in the garden or lifting things and oils for if you just need to relax or one's which will give you that feeling of refreshment.
Compresses.
This can benefit aches and pains in the muscles or can be used for rheumatic aches. Mix a few drops of the essential oils in a small bowl of water , soak a flannel into the mixture and apply to the area of pain, secure this with a bandage and leave for at least two hours. These compresses can be left overnight if done just before bedtime. I have been having these on the lower part of my back to ease off the pressure of the pains, I find that the warm compress seems to loosen the muscles and I am able to walk around in less discomfort.
Inhalation.
This is like what you do when you are trying to get rid of a cold, get a bowl of hot water and drop a few drops of essential oils into the water. Cover your head and bowl with a towel and inhale the steam, make sure you keep your eyes shut as some essential oils may irritate. This method is ideal for the winter colds and flu, certain essential oils will clear the nose when it's blocked and take away a nagging headache.
Foot bath.
The best oils to use in a foot bath is 4-5 drops of lavender, peppermint, rosemary or thyme oil, this will sooth away the aches of tired and swollen feet.
I'm not too keen on this way as my feet are too ticklish, but I know friends who have found this is good for them.
Burners.
Incense burners can be used around the home for the nice aroma of the oils, add a few drops in water and pour into the top of your oil burner, light the candle beneath and the nice scent of the oils will refresh your room. i like the quick way this gets the scents into your room, if like me your partner smokes and you don't this can help take away the tobbacco smoke, it can set the mood at a dinner or party and can also refresh your mind after a long tired days work.
These are just some of the uses for essential oils, there are lots of different oils to use for different ailments or aches, I will try to write about
some of them and their uses.
I won't be able to write about them all as there are lots of different one's.
You can always buy books from the health shop or bookstores to tell you what they are good for. A book will cost you around five pounds and the essential oils will cost anything from £2.50p to £7.00 depending on which one you buy and what brand, some like Frankincense and Myrrh are very expensive but worth it.
Basil.
This is great for the treatment of bronchitis, or asthma and sinusitis. It has antiseptic properties and can also help with a fever and indegestion. It has a refreshing effect and is also a good insect repellent, used in the bath or in an oil burner. It should also be avoided if pregnant and should be used in moderation.
Cedarwood.
Should also be avoided when pregnant, under no circumstances should it be used.
This oil is good for dandruff and scalp conditions and it has been said it has aphrodisiac qualities.
Used in bath water it can help
Camomile.
We are probably all aware of this one as it is a very commonly used essential oil. It is great for skin conditions and is helpful with burns, bites and inflamation.
It has also great uses for calming and relaxing especially pre-menstrual conditions. It can help with headaches and migraines and is good for regular use in the bath. You can also drink it in tea's to calm and relax, the same as if you drop a few drops into your bath or burner. As a massage oil it is ideal.

An expensive essential oil but it has great uses. It is good for bronchitis and asthma, stress and is extremely relaxing and soothing if used in the bath.
This has a nice scent if used in a burner, but like I said it is an expensive one.
Lavender.
Another commonly used essential oil. Lavender is great for calming and soothing away stress. It is effective for minor burns and scalds and is antiseptic. It can be used to relieve colds and flu and helps with headaches and pre-mensrual tension.

This is good for the circulation, as well as stimulation the immune system, it can be used in a burner to freshen a room or used in the bath to help tone the skin and revitalise your spirit.
this one is great for burning in a burner the scent lingers in the room to refresh your mind and if a few drops are added to your bath it will help to boost your feeling of well being.
Myrrh.
This is another expensive oil and it is used for treatment to help heamorrhoids, sores, menstrual problems and complaints. It is also used as a beauty treatment for mature skin, this should not be used by pregnant women.
Pine.
We all know pine is an antiseptic and this oil is great for inhalation, it will help unblock your nose, help with asthma and sinus problems. It is especially good for muscular aches and pains and will help ease away stress, fatigue and anxiety.
Be careful if you have sensative skin as this then should not be used in the bath.
Rose.
This is my favorite essential oil and can be used in massage to relieve stress and anxiety and also depression. It can be used in a burner to freshen the room and set the mood for a relaxing evening with your partner and is said to have aphrodisiac propeties.
Tea Tree.
This is also becoming very commonly used, it is good for a number of infections, such as colds, flu, burns, thrush, mild shock, sunburn, fungal infections, warts and verucas.
It is an antiseptic and anti bacterial, anti fungal and an antiviral oil.
Tea tree is very useful to have around the house, it can be used as a compress, in the bath and as a footbath and an inhailant.
It is widely used in shampoo's body washes and bath oils now, so should be easy to find in the shops.
Ylangylang.
Another of my favorite oils, this has a strong antiseptic, but it is best known for its aphrodisiac properties.
It is very relaxing and soothing in a massage, used in a base oil it can help to calm anger, relieve palpitations and works as a tonic.
It is good for depression and shock and helps with raised blood pressure.
Be careful not to over do it with the amount you use as it could cause headaches.
I hope this has been of some help to you, I like to use essential oils and if you want to give it a go do so, as I said earlier you can always buy books to read up on the subject before trying the different oils. Massage is a very usuful thing to learn and essential oils are handy to have at home for the bath and for massage.
I think they are very beneficial, not just for helping with ailments but for putting that spark into your relationship as a nice relaxing massage not only chills you out, it helps you both to get closer to each other. I have found them to be of great help to me over the years. You can buy essential oils on my gift page if your interested at looking at my website.
Best Wishes.
