Summer is on the way, and its time to start thinking about how to keep your pets cool and safe. Heatstroke can be seriously hazardous to your pets' livelihood, and must be addressed.

For those of us who live in warmer climates, we know how much the weather can have an effect on our daily lives. During the summer it's hard to do much of anything outside when temperatures rise above 100 degrees. The good news is that we humans can sweat. But what about our canine and feline friends? Especially those with big thick coats that were designed for different climates.

Many animals that we keep as pets live in environments that weren't originally intended for their breed. Because we import and export animals all over the world, they may find themselves a bit out of their element. I personally own an Australian Shepherd mix that looks more like a husky than anything else. It's easy to see that he doesn't love these hot California days quite as much as anyone else around. You must pay special attention to animals like mine who will have more trouble in warm weather than those that are more adept to it.

And what about pet owners that love to take the dogs for a drive? It is a known fact that a car can heat up to temperatures above 120 degrees in as little as 10 minutes. So if you do plan on taking Fido for a drive, make sure you either take him with you once you reach your destination, or give him plenty of fresh air to breathe if you decide to leave him. And never leave an animal in the car for an extended period.

Another issue to keep an eye on is exercising with your pet during summer. All pets need plenty of exercise. Many pets have an instinctual background that requires them to do something physical like herding or farm work. Pets who are under worked will often become bored and possibly overweight which will lead to even more health risks.

During summer it can be even harder to get out and exercise. But it still must be addressed. Because it heats up so early in the day, it is best to do your dog walking in the early morning or later in the evening when the sun is less intense. Aside from the fact that your dog can overheat, the burning hot asphalt can also do a number on your dogs' foot pads.

So all that said, don't be afraid to go out and have fun with your pets during summer. They love to get outdoors and explore the world around them. Just be responsible as you would with any other living creature you care about. And always remember to hydrate your pet sufficiently. There should always be an available water dish on hand. And if you go for a walk, it doesn't hurt to bring along some water just in case to keep you and your pet hydrated in case of any emergency.

So what are you waiting for? Get out there are have some fun with your pets. They're always ready to go!
