I was doing a search for a home improvement project I had planed when my aging computer crashed and burned with no hope for resurrection. Not wanting to be so detoured I gave my sister a call and went over to borrow her computer. When I got there I found it already in use by her young son playing some game online.
I explained my problem to him and my need to use the computer. Much to my surprise he clicked on one of the buttons on the screen and then quickly navigated through what looked like a science fiction web site. The page he left me on was the index for something called the Galactic Notepad. "You might want to try here first," my nephew said as he relinquished the computer to me. Sure enough there were some basic notes that would help me get started with some of the projects I wanted to do at home.
I've never been real good with computers and spent the next hour in a frustrating search for more useful information. My nephew came by and watched me for a few moments. "Uncle may I," he said as he reached for the mouse. I watched in amazement at how easily he did things I struggled with. Once again I watched him navigate through a science fiction web site until the page stopped on the Ship's Computer which turned out to be links to a collection of encyclopedias. One of them was them was for home improvement.
Another 30 minutes and I had all the information I needed to get start will all my projects. But now my frustration was replaced with curiosity. Why would a science fiction site have the information I needed when it was clearly a kids' web site. Following the example of my nephew I clicked on the Galactic Enterprise in the browser's Favorites list. I quickly found myself in the middle of a very interesting online book under construction. As I explored the various pages I began to realize that this web site was not just for kids. There was a little something for everyone.
A closer look at the Ship's Computer I found a small private collection of stories (Ship's Library) all written by the webmaster and author of this very unique web site. The link that took me back to the Galactic Notepad I discovered I could actually asked for advice and get it. I now know how to stick ceramic tiles to the ceiling. Visiting the Galactic Kitchen I discovered some really good recipes. Starfighter Command while being a little more mature in nature was still a site anyone could visit without the worry of viewer suitability. The Galactic Chapel almost had the feel of being in a real chapel. I probably could have spent the day exploring this one web site and not see everything that it contained.
If I had to describe the Galactic Enterprise in one sentence, I would call it a Christian owned science fiction themed web site designed to awaken something we seemed to have lost, our imaginations. The Galactic Enterprise is more than a gateway to science fiction fantasy worlds. It is a gateway into the world of computers for the more technologically challenged people like me. It is a gateway to faith and hope, hope for what could be a bright and wonderful future for us all.
