Free Pattern - Visit our website and download our free fabric wallet pattern! You will find this pattern creates a lightweight wallet, which adds very little weight to what you are already carrying around with you, saving your shoulder and back! This full size wallet holds your dollar bills, coins, plastic photo carrier and credit cards. Plus it comes with extra pockets you can use however you like.
Easy to make, takes less than 1 hour. A fun project for anyone. The pattern requires 2 coordinating fabrics fabric #1 must be double sided, quilted (or fused together) and fabric #2 a cotton/cotton blend. Almost all of the fabric #2 will require stabilizing with a very stiff interfacing. Very little fabric is required you can make the wallet out of fabric scraps you have around or simply buy fabric remnants on sale at your local discount store. Additional items - one package of 1/4" bias tape in a matching color, and some sew-in Velcro.
Pattern Pieces & Fabric:
1. Main Body fabric #1
2. Pocket #1 fabric #2
3. Change Pocket fabric #1
4. Flap Pocket fabric #1
5. Pockets #2, #3 & #4 fabric #2 (pockets 1, 2, 3 & 4 all require stiff interfacing)
6. Trim piece fabric #2
7. Pen piece fabric #1
Lay the pattern pieces out on the indicated fabrics and cut. Note: there are no seems in this pattern, all edges will be finished with bias tape.
Cut the stiff interfacing for backing all the Pockets (1, 2, 3, & 4).
All seems are sewn with a very small zig zag stitch on the edge of the bias tape.
Instructions
Prepare Pocket #1 with interfacing and fabric placed together, finish the top edge (long side) and then sew on the male Velcro piece (use approximate placement lines on the pattern). Set aside.
Prepare Change Pocket (only pocket not using interfacing, fabric #1) sew bias tape around all three sides of the rounded corners. Sew on the female Velcro (use approximate placement lines on the pattern). Now center the Change Pocket behind the Pocket #1 with bottom unfinished edges even and Velcro to Velcro lined up. Lay pockets flat and open - then sew them together on top of the bias tape on the Change Pocket. Match the bias tape seem of the Change Pocket, stitch on stitch as you join the two pieces. Now sew another seem very close to the first one giving a double strong seem to the sides of the Change Pocket & Pocket #1 combo. Finish the bottom raw edges with bias tape. Set aside.
Prepare Pockets #2, #3 & #4 - with interfacing and fabric placed together finish the top edge with bias tape (long side with pointed corners not rounded). Set aside.
Prepare middle Flap Pocket line up all bottom, rounded corner edges, like a sandwich with Pocket #2 on top (interfacing side down) and Flap Pocket in the middle and Pocket #3 on the bottom (interfacing side up) so that all right sides are showing no matter how you flip the flap :-) and all rounded edges are even and matching. Now sew bias tape around all three sides of the rounded corners finishing all edges except the top straight edge of the Flap Pocket. Set aside.
Trim piece (used to cover Velcro stitches) first, sew the female Velcro onto the top inside of the Main Body piece (see placement on pattern piece). Then pin the decorative Flap piece to the top outside of the Main body piece with rounded corners matching, covering the stitches of the sewn on Velcro from showing. Set aside.
Prepare Pen Piece sew bias tape along the long edges of the Pen piece. Set aside.
Construction begins
Combining the Change Pocket/Pocket #1 and- the Flap Pocket and- the Pen piece place the Change Pocket/Pocket #1 on the spot marked on the Main Body piece, with the top of the Pockets and the top of the Main Body both laying in the same direction see pattern pieces for indications. Pin together. Now slide the Flap Pocket unfinished top edge under the bottom finished edge of the Change Pocket/Pocket #1 combo, and pin. Then fold Pen piece in half, matching raw edges, and slide, centered on the Main Body, in-between the Change Pocket combo and the Flap Pocket. Hold in place and use your favorite pen by sliding it into the piece and adjusting how much you will need to leave out to fit and hold your pen snuggly, pin all in place.
You should now have a sandwich with the Main Body piece at the bottom of the stack (inside facing up), next is the Flap Pocket (lying with raw edge up pointing toward the top of the Main Body, Important: this piece should lay almost 1/2" higher than the bottom edge of the Main Body), next is the Pen piece, and on top is the Change Pocket combo piece (with its bias tape covering the raw edges of the Pen piece and Flap Pocket. Sew all together by sewing a seem on the bias tape of the Change Pocket bottom (seem runs horizontally across the width of the wallet). Sew this seem 1/8" from the first seem on this bias tape giving a nice double seem look. For strength you should sew over the first seem on the bias tape too.
Main Body Sew the male Velcro piece on the outside of the Main Body at the bottom (see placement on pattern piece). Place Pocket #4 on the inside of the Main Body at the bottom (covering Velcro stitches) with rounded corners of Pocket and Main Body matching pin together. Turn cut edge of bias edge under and place tape over the outside edge of the wallet, starting at the side of the wallet. Start finishing the entire outside edge of the Main Body, + Pockets 1 & 4 (avoid the Flap Pocket - which needs to flap freely, and is already finished). When you get back around to where you started with the tape, cut tape leaving a 1/2" to overlap where you began, and turn the final raw edge of tape under 1/4" and continue sewing until you match your beginning seem.
Your new wallet is complete!
